Backup and restore of Entire harddrive is not possible?

Question

Hey,
I am wondering why there is no such feature with our wonderful Windows Live OneCare to have a complete Backup and restore of Harddisk with partitions, boot records, even operating system and files to recover later in disaster.
Any inputs on this if something of this kind is coming in near future with Windows Live OneCare?
Regards,
Gurunath

That is not possible with OneCare, nor do I expect that it will be. This capability is available in Vista Business and Ultimate editions and there is 3rd party image backup software available. The typical consumer user would have a restore disc or hidden partition on the PC from the OEM. In the event of a failure requiring a restore, the data backed up by OneCare can be restored, but the OS and programs are beyond the scope of what's offered in OneCare.
Personally, if you have this need, I would recommend Acronis True Image.

Hey There,
I read Stevens reply and, with all due respect, I'm not sure that is correct.
I have the same queston that I have not been able to get a definative answer on yet. At least not one that I completely beleive.
I was told the same thing but if you go to the "additional files to backup" part of one care and add "C:\" I THINK it will backup everything on the "C". I was told that the Windows folder did not get backed up but when I searched my back up, guess what, I found that the Windows folder had been backed up. Someones wrong somewhere???
Here's the bigger issue. OneCare is not made for major failures like we are discussing which in turn gives people a false sense of security about their backup safety. I have been told that it will not restore various software back to a working condition and isn't that what you really need when you have a major HDD problem. The other issue is that many times by the time you have a major crash your "Recovery Disks" are so old that you generally just want to go to the next level of the OS as in Windows Media Center 2002 to Media Center 2005 or even to Vista. I mean who wants to install SP2 again and try to work forward from there??
Bottom line: Probably not a good thing that all these people think they are "SAFE" when they have a long, trying and expensive road ahead to recover from a major HDD problem.
Finally, shouldn't there be a PDF file of documentation or something that walks you through different option and the screen during say, "a restore process"??? Haven't found it yet and been told that I won't.
Good Luck GV and best reguards. You might want to try RAID technology. Hot swappable drives are the only way to go.

It looks like you are using 1.5 version. Currently in v2, we do not allow both inclusion and exclusion of files and folders as it was leading to more confusion. So we allow only the exclusion. The windows folder will not be backed up. However if you have another internal drive and you create a folder as windows it will be backed up.
Currently OneCare supports only the backup of data files. Still you are safe as your data files are backed up and the system and applications can be reinstalled as they are available in different medias.

Onecare is a file backup/restore program, like many other AV/system protection programs out there, although they do a better job at the backup part as they allow you to backup what YOU want to.
For a full system backup/restore, you need something like Acronis Trueimage, Norton Ghost, etc.

So are you saying that OneCare will automatically backup Windows if you have this "extra" folder on another drive. Are you saying that everything on the C:\ drive (or whatever drive letter you use) will be backed up unless you say don't back it up.
Please clarify.
Thx

OneCare backs up files by type. It does not backup the entire hard drive. It cannot backup program or system files. From the online help topic:
Backup file types
The types of files that Windows Live OneCare version 2.0 can back up has changed since version 1.6. OneCare won't back up any system files that are located in the Windows folder or the Program Files folder. In addition, version 2.0 can no longer back up the following file types:
- BAK
- COM
- DLL
- DRV
- EXE
