Reloaded XP without understanding the pitfalls RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a Dell Optiplex desktop with an XP Pro product code sticker on the side.   Because it was full of junk after two years of trying many new downloads, I decided to reload XP Pro from a disk I had bought on Ebay that was guaranteed legal.  It wasn't.

Then when I tried to install the user key on my Dell XP sticker, that wouldn't work either.  I guess Microsoft has the final say in rejecting everything, if they feel like it, but when they refuse their own product key, I have to wonder if they are being tough.

It seems I should have kept the original backup OS, instead of assuming all versions of XP could be assigned any genuine product key.   Newbies beware!   Unless you have your original Windows backup CD, you're in big trouble.
