Validated but when I open a document.....

Question
-
when I open a document, in the top left hand corner it says: This copy of Office is not genuine. I have validated both windows and office and it's fine so why am I getting this? I have spent hours trying to find a solution but I'm stumped. I only have a basic knowledge of computers so it's frustrating me.regards, Julie.Wednesday, June 3, 2009 12:35 PM

Good Morning Julie :-),
Okay this may answer the question as why you are receiving the non-genuine version. Was your brother's version of Office non-genuine? If so maybe there were remnants left behind which did not uninstall successfully. Next when you re-installed your Office it could still be seeing both your new version as well as the remnants left behind thus triggering the non-genuine flag. There are some steps which you can take to rectify this problem. First please back up your files and registry.

Good Morning Julie
Thank you for visiting us today :-). Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and provide us with the results. We are here to help. Please follow these steps for assistance:Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.
Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). If you have one, tell us about the COA. Tell us:
1. What edition/version of Microsoft Office is currently installed on your computer?
2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
4. Please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing.
5. DO NOT post the Product Key.
Not sure what to look for? See this page for reference: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
Thank you,
Stephen

Julie,
Please re-run the MGA Diag and post back your results. The results do not post the full product key. I posted the other information as sometimes customers may actually provide us with the product key and we would not want that to happen.
Thank you
Stephen

Hello Julie,
Did you ever previously have a trial version of Office installed on this computer? Also have you ever had an earlier version of Office installed? If yes then what version of Office was installed?
Thank you,
Stephen

Yes I had office 2007 installed by my brother when I first got my laptop to see if I liked it, which I did and after recently getting that message about being non genuine I bought my own disk.I uninstalled that version first, rebooted then installed this new disk but the same message is still there.Julie.Thursday, June 4, 2009 11:31 PM

Hi Stephen,After a few hours of manually uninstalling (as per your post,) and re loading the disk, I had success to the point that no message appeared when I opened a document, Yay!To be on the safe side before running "Windows Updates", I made another Restore point. Thank Goodness I did as after downloading the updates and rebooting, the same problem (not genuine etc) appeared :(.I restored back to just before the updates and then turned off "Automatic Updates", and now everything is fine. :)I am quite happy to leave it like this now. There's obviously something that clashes, not sure what but like I said I'm quite happy to leave as is.Thankyou for your help in this matter and I hope it may help others that have this problem.Regards,Julie.Saturday, June 6, 2009 4:55 AM
