Your copy of Windows is one that looks for an ASUS SLIC table in the BIOS in order to self activate. It is not finding the table
OEM Activation 2.0 Data-->
BIOS valid for OA 2.0: yes, but no SLIC tableClick Start and type 'slui.exe 3' to open an activation Window and use the COA OEM product key on the label on your computer to activate. The label is on the case, bottom, or in the battery compartment depending on your model.

Thank you for your feedback, Colin. I suspected the product key might be the issue. Unfortunately, the black ink on the COA sticker on the body of my laptop has faded completely away with wear & tear. I checked the battery compartment, too, but no sign of the key there.
Asus suggests I reinstall from partition and hope for the best. If you have any other suggestions I'd happily listen. Thanks again.

The embedded (OEM SLP) product key is not the same as the COA OEM key on the label. It is generic and cannot be used to activate manually. Without the COA OEM key you will need to reinstall from correct media.
If the recovery disk you used is from another model then you need to use the recovery partition and afterwards create a recovery dvd according to the ASUS instructions or order a new recovery disk from ASUS or a third party like Recovery-Disks.com. You need the correct recovery media so that you are protected against a hard drive failure that would also wipe out your recovery partition.
Where did you get the disk you have been using? Recovery media do not require manual activation since OEM SLP copies self-activate if the correct media is used. Did you use a disk from another computer?

It's possible that you updated the BIOS with a version that was not Win7 compliant - check with ASUS as to whether they have a BIOS update for your machine that's appropriate, and see if that works - otherwise, about your only option is a reinstall of the OS from the Recovery media (which may or may not work - more often than not, it does)
