Morning Yogiebear,
Please share more with me regarding the actual messaging your receiving. Are you receiving any counterfieting messaging whatsoever? Also please visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine . It appears you may be a victim of piracy. It appears you have a clone built computer verses a manufactured one such as a Dell. Curious where did you purchase the Microsoft Word 2002 which is currently installed?
Thank you again Yogibear,
Stephen

I can't see how my Word 2002 could be anything but genuine as I have had no problems getting updates for it up to the present but I found help on another forum ..........................
Assuming the copy of Office is in fact valid, the most common fix for this issue seems to be delete (or rename) the data.dat file located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\.
Once that's been done, try re-activating each product as you'd tried previously.
Full details over at the MS formus.
this seems to have fixed it & it now says it is validated......
thanks

Hi Yogiebear,
If you go to the validation site at the following address you will probably still find it fails and also if you run the diagnostic report again it will probably still fail.
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/ValidateNow.aspx?displaylang=en
However, as you say it removes the starfish from the tray and it does not come up with the message each time you open an office application after a fresh computer start/restart.
I have found yourself and Astrobi on this site besides myself experiencing the exact same problem and all of us have been pointed to the same things to try but still no solution.

Hi yogiebear,
A great big THANK YOU to you. Your solution fixed the problem. The starfish is also gone.
Cheers
