complete hard drive failure

Question

Hi,
I installed WHS on a virtual machine with 2 hard drives. I copied a single video file into a shared folder with folder duplication ON. I waited a whole night for the balancing/duplication to take place. Then I removed the 2nd drive to simulate a complete hard drive failure, WHS complains that a drive is missing, and that I should replace it. So I added a NEW drive into the pool, and removed the old missing drive from the storage pool.
The single video file is lost and the share shows as empty. Why is this? I had expected with folder duplication, the video file would be restored from the first disk. This scenario is reproducible every time.

Hi,
Windows Home Server isn't supported when installed on a VM. That being said:
What are the version numbers in the console? Is this machine running Power Pack 2 (6.0.2030)? I would verify that the all the updates are installed and then try again.
Thanks

It's running Power Pack 1 (6.0.1800). I will update and try again, but this doesn't reassure me at all. This is the most basic use-case that should have been covered in BETA versions, and I wonder if anyone who uses WHS ever simulated a failure before blindly putting all their data on it.
I'm not sure how you removed the HDD but this was a known issue that was fixed after Power Pack 1 was released.
Thank you

FYI,
After updating to powerpack 2 this issue seems to be resolved. thank you for the information..
BTW, I removed the hard drive by deleting the virtual drive... this is identical to pulling the cable and power on the drive to simulate a complete failure. Removing the drive "properly" wouldn't be much of a point.

I understand your point. The reason I made the comment is that if you had removed the HDD using the console, the KB I linked to would not have applied.
Thanks!

Thanks for posting. This gives some relief for those that depend on duplication with WHS (powerpack 2) it's doing what it's suppose to do. Glad I didn't start using WHS until after powerpack 2.Monday, June 22, 2009 1:08 AM -

The update for this issue was released back in 9/2008 as KB 950193. The easiest way to obtain it now is as a part of Power Pack 2 but many users who had Automatic Updates enabled have had this update on their machines.
Thanks!
