Win 7 not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought my laptop a year ago during the Free Upgrade from Vista to Win 7 with Lenovo. I was using Vista until a couple months ago (2-3) and decided to upgrade to Win 7. Both upgrade and clean install didn't work; sent my laptop to be fixed by Lenovo because customer service said hard drive was damaged (they actually told me to delete all partitions before install Win 7); got it back, upgrade and clean install still didn't work, so Lenovo sent me a recovery disc for Win 7. Clean install worked this time. I've been using Win 7 for more than a month, no problem, updates work fine.

Suddenly today I got a message saying "This copy of Windows is not genuine", left bottom says "Windows 7 , Build 7600, This version of Windows is not genuine" (I may have install the latest version Adobe Flash Player before than from the Windows Automatic Update, but I don't remember when) . Call Lenovo, the warranty expired so if I want their support, I have to pay for them. I've gotten too many problems with this already, I'm not gonna pay them again.

I don't know what to do, the disc is directly from Lenovo, so it should be genuine. Someone please help me with this.

  • So, I used the key came with the Upgrade disc, need to submit it 2 times to activate (don't know why it was invalid the first time). Now, do I need to contact Lenovo regarding this or is it good to use? It's fine now, but I've seen a couple people in this forum say that their Windows shows not genuine after a while (may be a year) or even for a new laptop . I don't want to use it for a while and get this trouble again, and I don't have time for doing one clean install after another either.

Your Lenovo PC doesn't have the correct BIOS for a Win7 SLP activation - The free Upgrade disk is almost always a System Builder installation.
It appears as if you are using the Vista Key to attempt to activate Win7 - check the paperwork that came with your Upgrade disk, and see what the Wn7 key should be.
Note that you also have a non-genuine installation of Office Enterprise - it is a version that is sold only in bulk to organisations for use on their own machines, and the Key in use here is one that was never issued by MS, but generated by a hacker's KeyGen program.

  • What should I do? Do I need to update BIOS and how? Or just need to use the activation key on the Upgrade disc? How about the Office?

Update: I used the activation key, first time said invalid, second time said successful (I only re-submitted it, no change)

  • Hello Rose_L,

In order to get rid of you as fast and as cheaply as possible, Lenovo support sent you their standard Windows 7 recovery disc which they knew would work for 30+ days and then would likely go bad when Windows Activation technologies saw that this type of installation (the OEM SLP installation put down by the Recovery Disc) was not accompanied by the required BIOS information that it needs.  When WAT sees this required info is missing, it is programmed to think it is not properly installed on a Lenovo computer and will report as NonGenuine.

The issue that was present and for which you registered a claim during the warranty is still present so you should demand to speak with a supervisor and tell them that the warranty issue they claimed that they fixed is still an issue.

Lenovo support can fix this by doing one of the following:

    1.  Sending you a utility program that will flash the BIOS and program it with the Lenovo Windows 7 SLP Certificate needed to work with Lenovo's Windows 7 recovery disc.  If they do this, then a clean installation by you using the Lenovo W7 recovery disc will then be the final step that puts down a Genuine installation that has all of the puzzle pieces needed to stay Genuine.

    2.  Having you send in the computer so their tech staff can do this correctly this time, all for free.

Regarding Office, did you purchase Office in the form of hologrammed installation discs inside a genuine looking pacakge (see the Office info at www.howtotell.com)?  If so, then you might qualify for the Complimentary replacement program.  Go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button.  When Office fails validation, on the subsequent web pages look for the links to the Complimentary Replacement program on the right side of the page.

Please post a new MGADiag report - but you should be good to go.
Make sure that you keep the Win7 Key handy, as you'll need it again if you ever have to reinstall
