WLW and Picasa Web Albums

    Question

  • I have posted on a similar topic: "(I didn't realise this!!!)"   and received a useful response from Brandon, but when the problem took another turn I added to that, but appear to have gone unnoticed - hence the new discussion thread.

I understand that WLW stores photos to be published on Blogger in duplicate (one display and one of a different size for click enlargement) in the blogger's Picasa Web Albums (PWA) under an album entitled 'Windows Live Writer'

Because I was already signed in on my computer to PWA, this had gone unnoticed by me, naively thinking that WLW photos would be stored on their own servers. As it was, my own PWA was already half way to the maximum free limit of 2 Gb when it started storing these photos. I tried signing in to another PWA account with my alternative Gmail address, but it would not apparently link to my Blog via WLW. The previous issue was that with a photo-rich blog being published via WLW, I would exceed my free quota in PWA.

However before this happened I had this further problem with the pictures. During my last blog session and directly because of the duplication of pix stored in Picasa Web Albums, my 'Windows Live Writer' Album reached the 500 picture limit for a single album. Live Writer then opened a new web album in Picasa entitled exactly the same as the first one.

Since then, whenever I have opened a recent blog for editing, the pictures in WLW appear blank with a cross in the top left hand corner. The only way to make them load is to select the picture frame and then go to 'Link to' and reselect 'Source Picture' which then loads the photo into WLW. This has to be done for each and every photo, otherwise they remain blank, although it doesn't seem to affect the published picture on the blog.

Is this a bug, or is there a way to make the second WLW album in Picasa Web Albums link back to the editor?

    Grateful for some guidance!

  •   Making a new 'Windows Live Writer' album should not have broken the existing images.  When you load up the post for editing it should show yu where an image is linked too on the sidebar when the image is clicked.  Is it pointing to an invalid location?

  • Hi Brandon,
Thanks for the prompt reply. In answer to your question, when I load any post from the weblog for editing, none of the images appear, only blank frames with a red cross and picture title in the top left hand corner. I click the frame and it shows 'Link to' as 'Source Picture', but the only way to get each picture to reload in WLW is to select the drop down menu and reset 'Source Picture'. This has to be done for each picture manually.
I tried recalling  previous weblogs from blogs that were in the original WLW Picasa Album, but they are just the same.

One anomaly is that when I go to the blog in Firefox after attempting to edit, the pix do not display at all for the whole blog. However if I switch the rendering engine from Firefox 3 to IE7 then the blog displays correctly on my computer.

This is getting really bizarre. I have tried to access the blog on another computer at home on the home network on IE8 and it all appears correctly. Perhaps there is an incompatibility issue with FF3 and WLW, though this has never happened before.

  • Any chance you are running a non english OS?

  • Or any chance that when the images broke, you happened to go from a *.blogspot.com address to your own custom domain (pauladev.com)?

Can you show an example of a post that appears broken?

  • Yes Brandon, I am using XP Portuguese with SP2. I have had a few anomalies lately with updates - can't install SP3  and a couple of security updates KB 961260 and KB 946648, nor IE8 for some reason. I thought I had traced it to a faulty 1 Gb RAM memory chip, and am waiting for a replacement now, and currently only have 1 Gb left to run the computer.

Is it possible that these updates are specific to an OS language?

The first 4 months I used WLW I had no problem retrieving blogs from the web for editing - the pictures loaded correctly. It has only been apparent to me since the second WLW opened in my Picasa Web Albums, and it appears to have the same name as the first. I would have thought it would have been designated with a separate serial.

On the issue you solved for me before, when I deleted all duplicates in the WLW Album, and you found that if I altered each photo slightly, eg removing the selected border, then they reloaded, this appears to be necessary for EACH photo when I retrieve the weblog, ie I have to reselect Source Picture, even though it is shown as being the 'link to' option, or changing a border etc.

  • Thanks for the reply Joe, in this case I didn't change any addresses. My sign in for Blogger is my gmail sign in, and I don't use a custom domain except for some email.
As to an example of a broken post, the blog itself remains unaffected unless I respond to the pop up re ' unsaved changes' and the only inconvenience is in the broken links to the photos when I retrieve the blog to WLW for editing. In effect what this means is that to edit anything in the blog and save the changes, I have to manually reload all photos in that blog, otherwise they will be saved to my blog as blanks.

  • Oh, I might know what this is then. What version of WLW are you using? And can you open up one of these posts in WLW, switch to HTML Source view, and show us the HTML you see?

  • Thanks Joe, My WLW version is Build 14.0.8050.1202.en

The first html for a photo that doesn't appear when retrieved is;-

    <p><a href="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[29].jpg" originalAttribute="href" originalPath="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[29].jpg" originalAttribute="href" originalPath="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[29].jpg" target="_blank"><font face="Comic Sans MS" color="#800080" size="3"></font></a><a href="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[28].jpg" originalAttribute="href" originalPath="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[28].jpg" originalAttribute="href" originalPath="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[28].jpg" target="_blank"><img title="AWW 11.02.09 Septuagenerian Celebration 029" style="border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px" height="424" alt="AWW 11.02.09 Septuagenerian Celebration 029" src="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[20].jpg" originalAttribute="src" originalPath="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[20].jpg" originalAttribute="src" originalPath="$AWW11.02.09SeptuagenerianCelebration[20].jpg" width="400" border="0" /></a></a></a><font face="Comic Sans MS" color="#800080" size="3"> </font></p>

I have a copy of the Windows Live Writer log file if that is of any use but I don't know how to attach it in this post. I could send by a separate email if you have an address.
