Installing OEM versions

Question
-
Hi - asked this Q elsewhere, but I think it was in the wrong forum.
I am building a new computer from srcatch, and am ordering the full boxed retail version of Vista. I would like to have a dual-boot system, with the 2nd partition being XP Pro. I own a Dell with XP Pro, and with it came an OS install CD. Obviously, I can use the install CD to reinstall Windows on that Dell, but my understanding is that I will not be able to use that CD to install Windows on the new computer I am building - is this correct? What about purchasing a Win XP Pro OEM version form a retailer - am I in the same sceanrio there? Can I request that MS send me a Win XP disc that will work in my new build, or will they not do that?
Any suggestions will be appreicated.Wednesday, October 8, 2008 2:56 PM

Thanks for posting! I'm glad you asked. The OEM copy of the XP on your Dell has to stay there on that machine and you cannot share your disc with your partitioned computer you are building for dual boot. For that machine, you will need to purchase a Retail Version of XP & Vista. OEM copies are tied to the Motherboard of the Dell.
I hope this helps. Post back for continued Validation related questions, we are here to help.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, as I figured.
But - good news. The whole reason I wanted XP, is because of the 32-bit drivers for my M-Audio PCI soundcards. They are currently working on 64-bit drivers, but are in private beta, and not slated for release until the end of the month, which to somone who posseses any intelligence (like, me, for ex.), that means not before turkey day. However, I just found out that Vista 32 is included in the Vista Ultimate retail box, which is what I was purchasing anyway. And, those M-Audio 32-bit drivers do in fact work in Vista 32. So, I am good to go for now!
