The system cannot locate the resource specified RRS feed

  • Question

  • I got this error message 'The system cannot locate the resource specified (800C0005)' from my java and vbs scripts after installing OneCare. The scripts failed at the http_request.send statement. I had to add an 'outbound[remote ports]' entry in the firewall for the standard HTTP port (80). I didn't expect this should be needed because 'internet explorer' had no problems accessing port 80 across the internet or on the local subnet before OneCare. Even more strange is that on one of my 2 Vista OneCare systems the HTTP firewall configuation must be present and enabled in order for the scripts to function. The other PC runs the scripts fine after I created, enabled and deleted the HTTP port from the firewall. Both are on 2.5.2900.15. Go figure!

  • I've done some more research. It appears this is not a problem with the HTTP port being blocked by the firewall. It appears OneCare is blocking my scripts from doing DNS requests outside the system. The scripts work fine if the web site is cached locally, but, not if the system needs to do a DNS lookup outside the PC.

    example code (save as test.js):

    http_request = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.XMLHTTP");
    http_request.open('GET', 'http://www.hp.com', false);
    http_request.send(null); // This is where this script fails with OneCare
    WScript.echo(http_request.responseText);
