Can't activate XP Home Edition, after installing SP3 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Problem Description: I do tech support full-time and I'm working on a co-workers home pc. It was working just fine before I installed SP3 and now I can't get logged on. I can't get it past the WPA wizard because it says I have an unauthorized product key. I can boot into safe mode but can't run keyupdatetool.exe while in safe mode. I've tried activating both over the telephone and internet. I also tried to uninstall SP3 thru Add/Remove Programs and did a system restore...still can't activate. Machine had both Internet Explorer 8 and Media Player 11 before installing XP SP3. There's a valid COA on machine (HP Pavilion 753n)but it won't accept the product key for activation. Here's the results from running MGADiag.exe: Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0): ----------------------------------------- Windows Validation Data--> Validation Status: Not Activated Validation Code: 1 Cached Validation Code: N/A Windows Product Key: *****-*****-T6DFB-Y934T-YD4YT Windows Product Key Hash: 3g4CZGFEDgbKmn/oB4pa2FZsssU= Windows Product ID: 76487-OEM-2211906-00102 Windows Product ID Type: 2 Windows License Type: OEM SLP Windows OS version: 5.1.2600.2.00010100.3.0.pro ID: {C44C332B-30BF-43EF-959D-C6E6CBEC4F5A}(3) Is Admin: Yes TestCab: 0x0 LegitcheckControl ActiveX: Registered, 1.9.40.0 Signed By: Microsoft Product Name: N/A Architecture: N/A Build lab: N/A TTS Error: N/A Validation Diagnostic: 025D1FF3-230-1_025D1FF3-238-2_025D1FF3-258-3 Resolution Status: N/A Vista WgaER Data--> ThreatID(s): N/A Version: N/A Windows XP Notifications Data--> Cached Result: 1 File Exists: Yes Version: 1.9.40.0 WgaTray.exe Signed By: Microsoft WgaLogon.dll Signed By: Microsoft OGA Notifications Data--> Cached Result: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGAExec.exe Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGAAddin.dll Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGA Data--> Office Status: 103 Blocked VLK Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage - 103 Blocked VLK OGA Version: N/A, 0x80070002 Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1_025D1FF3-238-2_025D1FF3-258-3_FCEE394C-3190-80004005_B4D0AA8B-941-80004005 Browser Data--> Proxy settings: N/A User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Win32) Default Browser: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disabled Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Allowed Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disabled Allow scripting of Internet Explorer Webbrowser control: Disabled Active scripting: Allowed Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting: Allowed File Scan Data--> Other data--> Office Details: {C44C332B-30BF-43EF-959D-C6E6CBEC4F5A}1.9.0027.05.1.2600.2.00010100.3.0.prox32*****-*****-*****-*****-YD4YT76487-OEM-2211906-001022S-1-5-21-1935655697-1708537768-725345543HP Pavilion 05P9852A-ABA 753NPhoenix Technologies, LTDVG3130920020815000000.000000+000Dell System,Dell Computer,Dell System,Dell SystemC602304F0184205204090409Central Standard Time(GMT-06:00)03103103Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage1039476F84C4B40044iCnywwNW1w4s9ukTIwGMGxyGic=54185-640-0000025-1746414 Licensing Data--> N/A Windows Activation Technologies--> N/A HWID Data--> N/A OEM Activation 1.0 Data--> BIOS string matches: yes Marker string from BIOS: 108A6:Compaq Computer Corporation|108A6:Compaq Computer Corporation|108A6:Hewlett-Packard Company|1085B:Hewlett-Packard Company Marker string from OEMBIOS.DAT: Dell System,Dell Computer,Dell System,Dell System OEM Activation 2.0 Data--> N/A Operating System: Windows XP

  • The problem is you have a HP computer which has a Dell OEM Windows XP Professional installation.  It was likely installed using a Dell-branded Windows XP Professional Reinstallation CD intended only for a Dell computer.  This will never activate on a HP computer! (besides, you apparently have a Windows XP Home Edition product key).  You will need to start from scratch and reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP Home edition using a HP Windows XP Home Edition Recovery disc.  Please see: HP and Compaq Desktop PCs: Looking for Recovery Discs?

In addition, the installed copy of Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage is a pirated/counterfeit/non-genuine copy.  You will need to purchase a genuine copy of Microsoft Office after reinstalling Windows XP Home Edition using the proper HP recovery disc.

  • Thank you Carey. I noticed Dell in the diag report and was wondering why it was there...now I know. This info was helpful to inform the pc owner that the previous tech they had brought their machine to really messed it up! Thanks again.
