70-448 is prerequisite for 70-452? RRS feed

  • Question

  • page Microsoft Certified IT Professional
tells that Exam 70-452 has prerequisite MCTS certification "MCTS: SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance" (column "Prerequisite MCTS certification"), i.e. the exam 70-448.

Though, the requirements for 70-452 does not mention it end

Also the page tells that 70-448 and 70-452 can be taken in any order
("*Multiple required exams can be taken in any order.",
comment  in the end of a page to table's last column name *)

So, can 70-452 be taken without passing first the 70-448? exam

  • Hi Guennadi,

Except upgrade exams there are not prerequisites in MS certification exams.

So you can take 70-452 and 70-448 in any order.

    But!!!

If you take first 70-448 and pass it, you get an MCTS certification : MCTS SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance certification. Then if you take 70-452 after 70-448 and pass it, you get a second certification MCITP Business Intelligence Developer 2008.

On the other hand, if you take first 70-452 and pass that exam you get no certification.

After passing 70-452, if you pass 70-448 too, then you get two certifications : MCITP Business Intelligence Developer 2008 and MCTS SQL Server 2008, Business Intelligence Development and Maintenance

Please check the Microsoft SQL Server Certification Paths guide for such details.

I had a similar problem with BI certifications. I had 70-446 but failed at 70-445 so I got no certification unfortunately :)

  • Ok, thanks, I already understood it rather late
since I registered for 70-448 (because I thought it to be prerequisite to 452!)
but I would have preferred to pass 70-452 first.

The 70-452 seems to me more logical and more important to pass first in order to get systematic approach -
since the design issues (70-452) are primary to to development and maintenance (70-448).

It is strange to develop/maintain (rubbish?) if you cannot design or correct the design.
Also, the main reason of certification for me is to get motivation to kepp studying and to prepare in some area ((important to me, required on the market)  rather than to get badges and paper certificates.
