windows 7 ultimate registering as not genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

A while ago my genuine windows 7 ultimate indicated it was not a genuine copy. I gave up trying to resolve the problem but now need to get back on line. I have found the threadds relating to this problem and have attached the output from the diagostic tool below.  I would be grateful if you could advise what has happened. I have tried the slui.exe but cannot obtain a phone number this way.

  • Your install is counterfeit.  It is labeled as Retail but the -067- portion of your Product Key indicates that it is a Not-For-Resale MSDN version.

In order to get an MSDN subscription, you need to sign agreements with Microsoft.  Then they allow you access to keys that are to be used ONLY for the purpose for which they were intended.  When those keys are leaked and "activated" enough times, Microsoft will ban them from further use.  That might take over a year before a particular one is banned.  But the effect is the same - the counterfeit installation is then flagged as non-genuine.

For more information see the following thread:

You will need to purchase a genuine copy of Windows 7, reformat and reinstall.  Be sure to backup your data first.

  • Hi

What I don't understand is why it was licensed and I was receiving updates for over 2 years before an update generated the "not genuine" message? I have all the packaging and discs in 32 plus 64 format with holograms that for the world of me look genuine. I checked out "genuine" windows 7 ultimate products in shops after this happened and all my packaging including the MS leaflet was identical, to the product key label stuck in the box. It is hard to see how this was a counterfeit.

Whay are so many MSDN copies released if MS are aware that there is a counterfeit problem and have known so for years?

I feel totally ripped off as I paid a handsome price for what I thought was a genuine product.

    Cheers

    Julie

  • Where did you purchase it?  Never ever buy Windows from Ebay or Craigslist or any place similar.  Those installs are 99.99% counterfeit.  You should pursue whomever sold it to you and demand an immediate refund.  And do not accept an offer of a replacement key if they make such an offer.  It too will be fake.

  • Most likely the seller sold the same MSDN Windows 7 Ultimate product key to many unsuspecting buyers and eventually Microsoft found out about it and blocked its use.
