wwt excel add-in problem RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I cant get my excel add-in work proberly. When I run the earthquake data to the wwt only a few of the earthquakes show. And the ones that show arent in the right coordinates. When i pick one quake from the worldmap the hovering text shows wrong latitude. I also cant get the geography data correctly to the wwt. Only a couple of countries show. I have tried every possible settings. I downloaded the required programs and I have windows 7. Could anyone help me because I have run out of ideas? thank you

  • Now i know what's the problem. The decimal part of the co-ordinate is separated with period like 50.334 and not with comma 50,334. In my version all the earthquake co-oordinates are expressed with commas. Thats why the visualization doesnt work. Same applies to countries_regions. When i copied that example you gave me the visualization worked correctly. Allthough excel gives an error message that lat and lon co-ordinates are not valid numerical values. Because of this error I cant go to viewpoint from data but the visualization works so thats an improvement. There must be something wrong in my excel settings.

    Thank you

  • Hi,

Thank you for showing interest in WWT Excel Add-In

Have you selected partial data or the entire data from "Earth based geometry sample" ?

Steps to Visualize the Earth Quake Data:

    1. Install Excel Add-in Installer
    2. Open Excel Add-In
    3. Click on WWT Tab
    4. Click on View Samples Data and select Earth base Point Data
    5. Select the "Earthquakes" in the range selector found just below the ribbon.
    6. Click on Visualize selection and then View In WWT
This visualize all the earth quake data.

    Steps to Visualize Geometry Data:

    1. Install Excel Add-in Installer
    2. Open Excel Add-In
    3. Click on WWT Tab
    4. Click on View Samples Data and select “Earth based geometry sample”
    5. Select the “Countries_Regions” in the range selector found just below the ribbon.
    6. Click on Visualize selection and then View in WWT button
This visualize the all the countries images on WWT

  • Yes I did all that. And i have done that many times. And i watched that learning video you have on your page. I did exactly as you instruct in the video. Also those viewpoint ribbons in excel wont work either. When I select go to view point either from earthquake data or from memory the wwt always goes to latitude 0 and longitude 0. Is there a program i have to download that was not in the list. I have windows 7, Microsoft. Net frameworks 4.0, Visual studio tools for office runtime 2010 and that Penumbra Beta 3.0x version of wwt.

    thank you

  • Hi,

    For the viewpoint issue,
To go the particular point in the layer, You need to select the cell within the layer(Set of data ) created and click on Go View point from Data and it goes to particular lat/long in WWT.
viewpoint ribbons in excel wont work either ..? What exactly is not working here. Not capturing the point properly or Go to View point ..? Need more details.

For the hover text issue with co-ordinates,
Can you please check with small data like only one row in the data.
    Take the below as example,
    LAT LON Mag
    10.437 56.992 8

    Copy this data in excel
    Select the data
    Click on visualize selection
And click on view in WWT
Now check , Point should visualize on WWT.
Mouse hover/Select that visualized point on World Wide telescope Application and it should show 10.437 hover text.

To validate it is displaying on the proper co-ordinate,
    In WWT,
    Click on Search menu
Select Lat/Long Item in the Drop down in front of Distance button
Enter 56.992 in Long and 10.437 in Lat text box and click on Go button
It should take you to the particular point where the point is displayed.

By this way you can confirm the right co-ordinate.
