Configuring public access to MSSQL 2008 R2

What needs to be done to configure a MSSQL 2008 R2 database server for secure public access but from a secured remote website?

The DB currently has a fixed non-public IP address as in 192.n.n.n and is not accessible from outside the domain.

Any help would be appreciated.

We don't want to open this up and not know what's really going on.

There is so much documentation that my mind is on leave and can't make sense of it.

Has anyone here done this and feels confident in the security?
