Renaming Disks RRS feed

  • Question

    I have several USB drives of the same model from the same manufacturer attached to my WHS,

    The problem is that I can't tell which is which when they are all plugged in.

    When it says a disk is failing I don't know what physical disk it is.

    Can I rename then in anyway so I know which is which?

  • You can't rename them in WHS, no. Have a look at this: http://www.tentaclesoftware.com/whsdiskmgt.html, it might help identify the disks easier (no renaming in this add-in yet, but it's being worked on).

  • Yeah I got that plug-in hoping it would allow me to rename; seems strange that Microsoft didn't think of how to identify disks that could be removed.     Anyhow, hopefully this plug-in will fill that hole quickly...or is there an alternative

    REGEDIT hack I could employ!?!?

  • To gather some more info, could you run the script from the beginning of this thead: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsHomeServer/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2680736&SiteID=50

    1) Start --> Run --> CMD

    2) Change to the folder you downloaded the script to

    3) cscript disk_info.vbs > disk_info.txt

    4) Copy the contents of disk_info.txt

    Paste the results in here. The unplug a USB disk, plug it into a different port, and repeat the script. Post the results.

    I'm looking to see if the PNPDeviceID changes on the USB disks when moving ports.
