How can I enter legitimate product key on illegitimate software? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a legitimate key for Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit. However, I didn't have the CDs, so I downloaded the OS from the Internet. I don't believe that the copy I downloaded is legitimate: it hasn't asked me to enter the product code, and I got a notification regarding exploitation. I would like to remove the exploit and enter my product key. I am abroad and therefore can't order the OS CDs.

  • Sorry, but you installed a BIO-locked copy of Windows Vista (designed for a Dell computer) whose product key cannot be changed.  You will need to reformat the hard drive and install a conventional copy of Windows Vista in order to use your product key.  Please see: How to replace missing Microsoft software

  • Also, I hope nothing you suggest involves right-clicking, because I'm on a Mac and I don't know where to get the keyboard driver. (I didn't have my Boot Camp CDs either.)

  • So the only way for it to work correctly is to order a CD? I am abroad in Hong Kong, so I don't think I can do that. Is there anywhere that the non-locked files would be available online? And how do I distinguish between the locked and non-locked files?

The Disk and Key you are attempting to use is locked to an OEM computer manufactured by Dell.
The Key you are using will not work with ANY disk, unless the system on which it is being installed is the correct manufacture and model.
That is what being BIOS-locked means.
There is NO way to use that Key in a Mac - either as Primary OS, or in BootCamp, or in Parallels.

that's all there is to it - it's the way the licensing system works, to reduce the cost to the legitimate users

  • Can I use it once I get back to the U.S. and find the original disc, though? The one in here is obviously not my key.

Depends on the source - but it's the Key in the end that defines where  you can install, and which version of Vista you get.. therefore, if the Key at home is the same as the one you are using... forget it, because it's not legal for anything but a Dell PC.

Oh - and by the way, you CAN right-click with a Mac mouse... I'll leave it up to you to find out how <eg>
