Sharing permissions needed for SyncToy to work properly? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I've just installed synctoy on my Vista Business x64 desktop and I would like to keep it nicely synchronised with my laptop (Vista Business x32). Copying of files works fine, but SyncToy seems to have problems with deleting the files/folders in the right folder in Synchronize mode. It is showing the following error: Cannot write to the destination file. Access denied. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 (E_ACCESSDENIED)) Deleting \\etc...

Do I have to set up some special sharing permission on the other side? Does SyncTool have to be installed on both sides in order to work properly?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Best regards,
    Tomas.

    Hi,Tomas

Welcome to Sync Toy world. Smile

make sure Sync Toy has fully permissions on both folders.

do not modify any file under the folder while synchronizing.

no need to install a duplicate one.

anything uncertain please let us know it. Smile

    Thanks,

    Baoke

  • Dear Baoke,
Thank you for your help! Please, how can I set the permissions on the folder to be synchronised? I was looking for something in the sharing options of this folder and it seems it should have some user's name to be granted permissions. Does it use any particular name of the service that should be granted permissions?
    Again, thank you very much,
    Tomas.

  • Hello,
I've even tried to grant to the synchronised folders all the permision to all users. Still no change and I'm having the same problem! Thank you very much for your help in advance,
    Tomas.

    Dear Baoke,
The file that I was trying to synchronise wasn't in use. In the fact, it wasn't even opened, as I copied it in the sync folder just to give it a try after all the previous synchronisations failed. Since then, the computer was restarted at least several times so it is impossible it was being used by any application running in background. It is a regular .doc file.
    This is the log:

  • Same problem with Windows Vista and Windows 7 RC (after reinstall).

However i found my own solution, just locate SyncToy.exe from Program Files folder,
then Synctoy.exe, right click, "Run As Administrator".

But, now it will require, "Run this program as an administrator", so i am able to use desktop icon.

    # Right-click the application, and then click Properties.
    # Click the Compatibility tab.
    # Select the Run this program as an administrator checkbox, and then click OK

Not an ideal solution, but better than nothing.
