questions regarding Office validation RRS feed

  • Question

  • I obtained a original MS Office disk, via Indiana University program, which supports the knowledge base of their employees, by promoting home use of their products.  I did NOT have any problems with validation until a recent MS request, prompted updates.  Now it indicates INVALID use, and that it is licensed to a large corporation (most likely Ind University).  How do I resolve this problem?  I have the disk.. but don't feel the need to reinstall.. as it runs fine.  And I don't need or want the update (really).

The Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 is Non-Genuine.  It was installed using a Blocked Volume Licensce Key (VLK). VLK software is not to be sold to consumers, but are designed for large organizations that need 10s 100s or 1000s of Office installs.  In this case the VLK is the one Microsoft licened to itself for use by it's own employees.  The Key leaked to the internet some time ago and Microsoft has since blocked it from further use.

Now, I am Not accusing you of piracy. There are a number of reason why your Office would be using a Pirated key. The three most common are:

    1) You may have bought the software from a unscrupulous seller who sold you pirated software.

In which case I recommend, if possible, contacting that seller and demand the Genuine Microsoft software, that you paid for or at least a refund. I also recommend submitting a Piracy Report at http://microsoft.com/piracy

    or

    2) You had your computer worked on (by a repair person, a friend or that smart kid down the street) and in the course of fixing the PC, they had to reinstall Office.  Instead of contacting you to get the proper Product Key, (maybe due to not knowing it was wrong or due to laziness) they downloaded it from the internet.

In this case, you probably have a Genuine copy (and Product Key) of Office, you just need to uninstall the Non-genuine one and reinstall the software using the proper (Genuine) Product Key

    or

    3) A repair person, a friend or that smart kid down the street may have thought they were doing you a Favor by installing a copy of Office on your computer, "for Free".  But in fact he/she installed a Pirated Copy.  It's all togeather possible they didn't know they were doing anything wrong and thought they were just being nice.

In this case, the best way to resolve the issue would be to uninstall the software and if you still want to use Office, buy it from a trusted retailer or online store.

    Thank you,

  • Hello indyjones474,

It is entirely possible that you do possess a disc purchased from Microsoft under what is called the Home Use Program.  http://www.microsofthup.com/hupus/chooser.aspx?culture=en-US

The OGA Nofitifcations Utility is telling us that unfortunately, at the moment, your computer does not have that Home Use Program Edition of Office installed.  What is installed is a nongenuine  widely pirated Volume Licensing copy of Microsoft Office.  The specific Stats code of 114 VLK 2 means that the product key used to install this copy of Office 2003 is the one the Microsoft issued to itself for use in its own operations.

Darin's post relates how it is very possible for genuine Office installations to be replaced by nongenuine installations.

To correct the issue, uninstall the current installation of Office, restart twice, then install your HUP copy of Office.  Once installed, restart, then Activate normally online, then go to www.microsoft.com/genuine and click on the Validate Office button to validate.  If you want to, after doing the above, you can post a fresh copy of the mgadiag report for a final check up.
