Win XP Re-Installation help RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am re-installing the os on a pre-installed win-xp pro system

I borrowed an installation disk since I don't have one, and it says "The Product Id you entered is not valid"

Since the computer came with the License, shouldn't I "own" the right to install it?

Please can someone give me some help with this?

*Edit* - Would it be a problem if I used a fake license off the internet, then changed it over the phone? (I can't install it at all)

  • Hello W0lfbane,

You will see that error message when you try to use an OEM product key with a non-OEM installation CD.

  • Thanks.

I installed with another (illegal) key, then used a tool I found in the section you pointed me to to change the key to my (legal) one.

I guess it worked, because the "validate windows" thing when I installed SP3 worked fine (said it's valid)
