If you cannot successfully activate via the internet, then choose the alternative option to "activate by phone", the only other method.

How to activate Windows XP by phone:

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:

    1. Click 'Start', point to 'All Programs', point to 'Accessories', point to 'System Tools', and then click 'Activate Windows'.
      Or,
click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area (aka system Tray).
      Or,
clicking Start button, then Run, and type in "oobe/msoobe /a", then press the Enter key located on your keyboard.

    2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to active Windows now.

    3. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box, and then click Next.

    4. When activation is completed and you receive the following message, click OK.
"You have successfully activated your copy of Windows".

  • Sealtldvl,

Once you do a certain number of activations of a given product key, the key is flagged in the MS activation servers and all future activations of that product key will have to be done over the phone.

In order to work around that and save time, once you get the next installation of XP set up and running the way you want, use an imaging-based backup program to take a "snapshot" of the installation which is then saved on another hard disk, and external hard disk, or on CDs/DVDs.  Then, when the next crash occurs, you just reimage the hard disk on the computer and you are up and running in less than 1/3 the time.

There's more to it than the simplified description above, but it is worth looking into to save time and prevent lost data.

Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, and Drive Image XML are just three examples of disk imaging backup utilities.
