Restaur from saved images on WHS V1

Question
-
Hello,
Question:
What could be the right process to restaur from saved images on WHS V1, 2 partitions in multi boot, on a new disk after partial crash of the original HDD ?
History:
on my PC, a 350 Sata2 HDD with 3 partitions:
- a first primary boot partition with XP
- a second logical partition with system W7 64
- a third partition with data
Usually:
Multiboot menu OK with XP or W7 64 choice
From yesterday : Curious problem:
Multiboot menu OK but impossible to choose W7 64 :
" no system found, you must boot with Original Windows CD"
Boot with original W7 64 CD :
Partition tool : on the HDD, there is only the XP partition ! (*)
With DOS : only C:\ (XP) , no mode D:\ (W7 64) or E:\ (Data)
Boot PC with the WHS restaur PC CD :
I see correctly through the network, on the distant WHS, the previously saved partitions of C:\ (XP) and
D:\ (W7 64)
BUT BIG PROBLEM :
Restaur impossible from W7 64 saved image because on the PC, the W7 64 partition is not founded (*)
-> What can I do ?
I think about this idea :
-(1)- Replace old partially crashed HDD by a new HDD with 3 partitions :
Primary C:\ and Logical D:\ with the same size as original HDD
-(2)- Boot PC with the WHS restaur PC CD
-(3)- Restaur C:\ (XP)
then
-(4)- Restaur D:\ (W7 64)
BUT QUESTION :
-> What about boot sector ?:
-> Has it been saved inside C:\ image saved on WHS ?
Many THANKS for any idea, info and experience !Jean-Max

Searching in this forum for "restore multiboot" will, unsurprisingly, answer your question for you.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

Thanks Ken for your links :-)
I read all info on these links but I didn't founded clearly :
-(1)- Master boot record will be restored (YES or NO) on the new HDD on the PC, during the C:\ (XP) image restoration from WHS ?
-(2)- I understand that I have to previously prepare the new HDD on another PC, with partitions sizes equal or bigger size than original ones :
I suppose I have to create an primary and 2 logical partitions (like the original disk) and (try to) make active the primary one ?-(3)- No answer about this remark:
On my partially dead original HDD, there is a folder created by distant WHS, with correct drivers used during restoration process :
-> Without the original HDD (replaced by the new one), where WHS will be able to retrieve these drivers ?Thanks !

Hello,
On my PC, I retrieved the 2 lost partitions of the HDD 1, with the excellent freeware TESTDISK
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_6.14_ReleaseSo, I don't need any PC restoration from WHS
(Auto) Answer about my previous Question 3 :
The folder containing the drivers useful for PC restoration from distant WHS was already present on other disks than the partially failed one
It's English translated name is " Windows Home Server drivers for restoration"

Jean-Max,
With regards to your issue, I'll provide the following comment(s):
Issue 1: '... not seeing the client computer';
Ans: I have had this problem and the following are steps taken to restore the connection:
(1) If the connection is wired, try plugging the client directly into the router - this assumes the WHS Server is plugged directly into the router as opposed to access through a switch.
(2) Download the correct drivers for the Ethernet LAN card and save to a floppy or thumb drive. DUring the boot process follow S/W provided instructions to add these correct drivers to the WHS boot process.
With regard to the following specific questions, I'll comment following the question:
Question: (1)- Master boot record will be restored (YES or NO) on the new HDD on the PC, during the C:\ (XP) image restoration from WHS ? Ans: YES
-(2)- I understand that I have to previously prepare the new HDD on another PC, with partitions sizes equal or bigger size than original ones :
I suppose I have to create an primary and 2 logical partitions (like the original disk) and (try to) make active the primary one ? Ans: NO, the restore process will create the partitions needsd automatically as long as the new drive being restored is equal to or larger than the original drive whose partitions were backed up.-(3)- No answer about this remark:
On my partially dead original HDD, there is a folder created by distant WHS, with correct drivers used during restoration process :
-> Without the original HDD (replaced by the new one), where WHS will be able to retrieve these drivers? Ans: See previous comment above - Issue 1.(2).ADDIT: I have had the experience during a new install of WHS 2011 - 8 attempts, to a WS Caviar Green Drive (1Tb) from the Server that the install would ultimately fail with directory and partitions created; after 8-failed attempts, I swapped out the WD drive with a Maxtor used 1TB drive results - success first attempt.
I sincerely hope this helps.

Hello,
MANY Thanks Steve for your precise and detailed answers :)
I will make fresh save to WHS of the main partitions (*) of the PC disk which had these partially crash
(2 lost partitions, by a big error on table partition, rebuilt with success by TESTDISK)
I will no more trust this disk an will change it soon
(*) Last question :
This PC main disk has 3 partitions (XP, W7 64, Data)
Last times, I made 3 saved images on WHS (one by partition)
-> For future full restoration of this disk, in one step, must I create now, one single image on WHS of the whole disk (3 partitions) in one image ?Many thanks for the patience :)
Best regards from France

From your previous answer (*) , I concluded that saving the whole disk (3 partitions at the same time) is the better choice, if I want to change the disk for a new one, then restaur all the partitions in one only step
(*) the restore process will create the partitions needed automatically as long as the new drive being restored is equal to or larger than the original drive whose partitions were backed up.

Hello,
Yesterday night, I restored from distant WHS the image of the 3 partitions of the HDD1 of my main PC (XP, W7-64, data)
First, I had to create 3 partitions on the new HDD because restaur process is not enable to do it
After, I had only to link each distant saved partition to each corresponding partition on the new HDD then, start the restaur process
All is OK : MBR, bi-boot, etc..
Thanks for all :-)
