have Windows live account, but onecare activation will not accept username, password RRS feed

  • Question

  •

I have a Windows live ID(and have for quite a while). The account is not under a hotmail or live email, but rather under my old and trusty yahoo account. No problem so far.

Yesterday we decided to switch from a different virus program to live onecare. All went sort of well. Downloaded it and installed onto both computers. But activation is an issue: I find myself unable to activate the product on either machine with my yahoo username and the password. The error message is "The email address or password is incorrect. Please sign in again." (Yes, I've tried it again and again; there are no typos in the process.)

    So somebody help, please!

  • Hi Lynn,

The password of your yahoo email and the password you uses to log-in to Live ID can be different.

    Visit https://billing.microsoft.com

Try to log-in using your Live ID if same problem happens.

Refer to this Knowledge Base article on how to reset your password for your Live ID, it wont affect the password you use to sign-in to your yahoo email.

Yes, I'm very aware that the Yahoo password and the Live password are different (and they ARE different, very different). I use the Yahoo ID and password ONLY to login to Yahoo; I use the Yahoo email address as the Windows Live ID username and the distinct Windows Live password ONLY to login to Windows Live. And I just tried it once again to login to the following:

Works perfectly, just as it always has.

But the Yahoo email as Live ID and the distinct live password do NOT work to activate the OneCare product. That's the problem.

    Sad

  • Hummmm. Interesting. I went ahead and reset the password to a much shorter one (the original was pretty long), and activation worked just fine.

  • Hi, Lynn. You figured out the problem, but I just wanted to confirm that there is currently (and has been for quite some time) an issue where a password longer than 8 characters will not allow you to log into the OneCare activation server. In my opinion, this is a stupid bug.
