How to fully restore whs2011 from it's backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • I tried to create a system restore disk for whs 2011 by going to "Start," "All Programs," "Maintenance," "Create System Repair Disk."  As soon as I clicked on it, I was given the response that it could not create the disk because there was no CD/DVD Burner. Well, there is a DVD burner, Drive E:, so why can't I create one? And if I did create one, could I boot from it and get the full restore image from my backups which reside on another physical drive?  In other words, how can I restore WHS 2011 as it was the last time I backed it up to a new drive, in case of a hard drive failure? I have three internal hard drives, the 2TB with the OS and client backups, a 1.5 TB that backs up that drive as well as the shared folders which reside on yet another 1.5 TB drive.  I assumed that when the server is backed up, there was some means of restoring it to a new drive. So far, no one has made clear how to do this. And what do I do about the DVD drive that my OS says I do not have. I installed from it, I can put a disk in and read it just fine, so why does WHS 2011 not see it for me to make a Repair disk?  Any help would be most welcome. Thanks.

  • System Restore will restore an OS backup from the external HDD on which you have them - you will be able to select from multiple backups if they are available. It is not a reinstallation of WHS. Once restored, all your changes and customisation are retained.

  • Boot from the original installation disk and choose system restore.

  • Thank you for the quick response. When I boot from the Install disk and select "System Restore," does it allow me to select one of the backups from the drive containing by daily backups, or does it install the original OS?

    Thanks

  • Thank you, this answers my question completely. As a side note, I booted from the install disk, checked the restore options, and then, my server died, and would not reboot. Two short beeps, which usually indicates memory or motherboard. For a one month old server, this was unwelcome. I have a replacement on the way, but thanks for all the feedback. It is refreshing to have a clear, concise answer.

  • No problem. I hope that your new hardware lasts a bit longer than the first! I am not sure why you needed to restore in the first place but note that Administration of your Server should be done via the Dashboard unless you are very sure of what you are doing!
