Sync errors and Windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm having problem with synctoy ver 2.1.0.0 that I've not seen with any of the older versions of synctoy or OS's but recently migrated to Windows 7, everytime I sync a number of files (different ones everytime) always show up with the following error:

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process exception form HRESULT 0x80070020 ..........."

Running Windows XP on laptop and Windows 7 on desktop pc

when I go and check the individual documents, all are Word, Excel, PDF's etc. so no running files in sync folder. I find that the changes have transferred to the older documents correctly and its an incorrect error that is being reported.

The folders contain approx 35,000 files that I'm checking to be synched

There are no access or network problems the link I use is fully authorised and sharing is set up for full control all of which works in a manual mode

I tried posting this on someone elses with a similar topic question but no acknowledgement or response, presume I need to ask specifically as a fresh question

  • Hi Trev,
Firstly, these error info means those files are using by some program but not themselves are running. This is a by design feature, which those be using files coudl not be synced.
Then look into your log, in most of the time outlook.pst is used by outlook if you have the outlook open while you run sync. Even just after you close the outlook, you know it may not release the handler at instance. For the other files, I am not sure, what kind of folder it is. But basicly they should be used while you do sync, as SyncToy use windows APIs to detect the status of the files.
If you want to find the detail and verify what programs are using those files you could go to download a file handl viewver to have a check. Then close those program and release those handler. Suppose then those files will be synced without errors.

  • Thanks Ping
Should have said as well, that I've tried running synctoy after start up with nothing being accessed, I've also tried running synctoy and getting the errors then running again 10 minutes later with a new bunch of files showing as the error with no applications being started.
I guess the other point that may help is about the files that are reported as errors, when I look at them individually they copied/updated correctly. This is also what I found in Outlook as I was aware of the timing issue on it closing. I'll have a look for a file handler viewer but had moved away from that as the root cause because of the above but I'm by no means 100%

    Cheers

  • I am getting the same error messages.  My files do NOT copy correctly, several thousand of them were renamed with a random name and .TMP extension.  Good thing I don't rely on only one backup method.

And NO, THERE ARE NO OTHER PROGRAMS RUNNING. Sync Toy is the ONLY program open or running.  It may be a service that is automatically started by Windows, or Trend Micro Internet Security (Pro) but there are NO user opened files or programs running.  This occurs even at startup, so it is not a matter of having opened the files and they haven't been released.

  • I'm having the same problem: errors are reported but files are copied correctly. No programs running in the background. This happened on SyncToy 2 and 2.1 on Windows 7. Looking forward for a true resolution of this problem from Microsoft.

  • Don't know if this will help track it down, but the error occurs ONLY with media files (pictures, music) on Windows 7 "Home Premium".  Sync Toy ver 2.1.0.0

XP Pro never has any issues, but I'm running 2.0.100.0 on that one

Are you sure Windows media player isn't trying to index these files in the background? or maybe messing with DRM, or something?

I had something similar when first set up synctoy re the .tmp extensions etc.
A workaround I found was as an initial start copy all the files into the backup sync location and run the tool, it should find none to copy/update on that first run.
Then just use the tool as normal and it seems to work OK for me except the constant false errors on a small minority of the files

This is slightly different from mine I'm seeing it on documents such as Word, Excel etc.

  • Thanks Trevnew!  Appreciate your help!  That does seem to get it going, except like you say that constant error rate on a few files.  It's much better now, but still not reliable.  Quite frightening when you think of how much work it could wipe out.... will continue with REAL backups and just use this as a convenient way to get the same files on two computrers.

Just thought of something... when you sync, how many files are in the folders (whether changed or not)?  I use several folder pairs, and the other factor is that all of the SMALLER sets (eg: up to 1000 files or so) work fine, but the two largest (Pictures and music) with many thousands of files are the problems.  Maybe it's not the type of file, but the quantity.

  • Good news glad its working.
Yes I agree with you my folder has in total something like 35,000 files of all different sizes and the file numbers came up on another forum as a possible contributing factor. My only angle is that its the same block of files I've used for the  last couple of years with other OS's and older versions of synctoy you would expect it to get more robust instead of more problems......
