  • I think this is over my head, wasted an afternoon, now will go to Office Depot to see if they can fix this.

Thank you for trying, but I'm just not getting it.

  • Windows has discovered a hacker's Activation Exploit.

For what version and edition of Windows is your computer licensed, according to the COA sticker that should be on the case?

You will need to reformat and reinstall using genuine media and Key - either from the manufacturer's Recovery media, or from a fresh retail disk of the appropriate operating system.

  • The sticker on the bottom of the laptop reads:  Windows 7 Home Prem OA

Where/How can I obtain the genuine media?  I have the key from the bottom of the laptop sticker.

On the control panel, under the heading "Windows activation", the screen reads: You must activate today.  Activate Windows now.

Should I click on the link and activate?

    Thank you.

  • You cannot activate the current install. It will drop into notification mode - there are minimal problems with that, apart from MSE (if installed) beginning a countdown to shutting off after 30 days.

Activation Exploits may leave the system open to all sorts of malware, so we always recommend a clean install, even if it's for the same edition.

You will need to back up your data to external media.

You can download a Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium ISO from here.... http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso  (for the 64-bit version)

and create the DVD from that.

Do a Custom install booting from the DVD (or starting from within Windows) and enter your COA Key on request.

  • We only use this laptop for facebook, email and banking, we have not added any purchased software, is there anything specific I should back up?

  • All your user data - any emails you need to keep, photos, passwords, etc.

You can use the Windows Easy Transfer tool to pretty much do the job for you - see the Help files.

  • I downloaded from the link you sent, burned it to disc, how do I install it?
    Wednesday, February 13, 2013 8:14 PM
  • See the instructions here...

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html

you already have the disk burned - so you can ignore that part.

  • Please do me and yourself a favour - once you get the machine back from the store, return to this thread, and post a new MGADiag report. All too often, such reinstalls are bodged, and some are even counterfeit.
