Report with a Date or Number field fails with rsRuntimeErrorInExpression RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have reports written using the report wizard in CRM.  At some point within the last month, the reports that have date or number fields in them started failing with this error:

The report cannot be displayed. (rsRuntimeErrorInExpression)

Clicking the "Try Again" button on the report produces:

    Invalid Argument

    We did recently install RU17

    Any help is appreciated

    Thank you,

    DML

  • Hi,

Did you try to remove the date or number fields from the report and run them? Did the current reports without those fields work?

  • Yes, when you take out those fields, the reports work properly.

    Thank you,

  • The most important part of the log is "Specified argument was out of the range of valid values". I don't know if this error could be because of Rollup 17. Because it could be odd problem if UR17 would change the valid ranges. Did you try to uninstall UR17 to see if the error occurs again?

  • I'm trying to avoid uninstalling RU17 if possible.  Is it possible that the RU17 caused an incompatibility with SSRS 2008?  We are using SQL 2008 as the DB server.

    Thank you,

  • I am having the same issue after the RU17 update. You will also find that adding ANY integer fields will have the same result, e.g. Currency, Date and Time, Floating Point Number, Decimal Number and Whole Number. We are likely going to have to roll back the update until a fix is released. We too are using SQL 2008, not sure about the SSRS version though.

  • FYI, rollback didn't fix the issue. It has to be a bug.

UPDATE: OK, I can now make reports with integer fields, but the reports created previously are still broken and will need to be recreated.

  • Hi nasyrax,

To be clear, after you uninstalled RU17 you can create reports with integer fields and you can recreate your existing reports with integer fields and they work again?  I want to make certain that your existing state = RU17 uninstalled.

    thx,

  • Yes, we uninstalled RU17 and I can create reports with integer data. Although I have noticed that a few reports that previously worked are getting the error "(rsProcessingAborted)", which I found some information on at the following link. I haven't had a chance to see if recreating the reports getting this error fixes the issue, but I will test it when I get a chance (before 5:00pm EST today) and post back.

    http://ashwaniashwin.wordpress.com/2013/07/21/crm-2011-reporting-error-the-report-cannot-be-displayed-rsprocessingaborted/

UPDATE1: If I edit a report that gave me the "rsProcessingAborted" error, when I get to the layout section, it tells me I don't have permission to access a field on the form and it has been removed. The report will run, but I don't know what field is missing.

UPDATE2: I found that if I open the reports that previously had the integer problem and open the report wizard for it, I just click through all the screens, making no changes, run the report and it's fixed!

  • Many thanks, I do have the very same problem... I'll try removing RU17 and see if it will fix it.

Before rolling back to RU16 I contacted the MS support, to see if they have already a fix for this problem. I already got a phone call and (as far as I understand it) this issue is NOT KNOWN by MS. They are testing it now and will call me back with suggestions.

May be they will release a fix...

  • EDIT 2

I did some additional testing in our TEST environment. A copy of our 'live' system (migrated from CRM 4.0 about 1 year ago and with quite a lot of customizations) with RU17 has the very same problem, BUT an Out Of Box organization on the same server (created when the server was already running CRM 2011 and with no customizations) works fine.

I rolled back our live environment to RU16 and reports now are working (after re-saving them). I'm working with MS on the TEST system to see if we can find the reason behind the problem.

  • I am facing the same problem, The CRM out of the box reports are working but when i am creating any reports that contain integer or datetime...etc filed types i get this error:

Report render failure. Error: The Hidden expression for the tablix ‘Table’ contains an error: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. (rsRuntimeErrorInExpression)

any resolution how to fix this ?

    Thanks.

  • As far as I know, the only solution- as stated above- is to uninstall RU17 and re-save the reports.  I'm eager to hear back from Claudio on his open ticket with MS.  Claudio, please be sure to enlighten us when you have anything from your testing with MS.

  • Here last info received from MS.

During the whole day I have been trying to reproduce the issue without success. These were my actions:

    1.        CRM migrated (4 -> 2011) with Update Rollup 15
    2.        Installed UR6 for RS - CRM2011-Srs-KB2600640-ENU-amd64.exe
    3.        Created a new custom report through Report Wizard.
    4.        Added subject and CreatedOn columns against the task entity.
    5.        Ran the report and it worked.
    6.        Went to SQL and collected all the info from report.
    7.        Installed Update Rollup 17 - CRM2011-Server-KB2915687-ENU-amd64.exe
    8.        Restarted the server.
    9.        Ran the same report ->No repro
    10.    Installed UR17 for RS CRM2011-Srs-KB2915687-ENU-amd64.exe
    11.    Restarted the server.
    12.    Ran the same report ->No repro

From my side I did more testing and 'out of box' reports from MS do run well in RU17. Also some custom reports we wrote in Visual Studio are working fine.

I'm still working with MS support, I'll keep you informed...

  • I submitted to MS a couple of CRM reports from our LIVE system rolled back to RU16. I extracted the same report when it was not working and after making it working again by 'resaving' as decribed above by nasyrax.

They checked the 2 'versions' of the report and found some differences (see the 'hidden' parts). They are still investigating...

  • Hi Claudio,

Thanks for your reply and explaining your communication with MS since i have the same problem.

I opened the report and i found what you mentioned earlier about hidden columns. but i am not quite sure do you recommend to remove these columns or what is the process of re-save the report you mentioned as well.

    Thanks and waiting your reply.

  • Sorry if I did not explain properly...

The process of 'saving again' the report (I found that if I open the reports that previously had the integer problem and open the report wizard for it, I just click through all the screens, making no changes, run the report and it's fixed!) fix the report problems apparently by removing the 'hidden' parts. This has been tested in some CRM 2011 enviroments upgraded to RU17 and then rolled back to RU16.

My understanding is that during RU17 in customized CRM 2011 deployments, something in reports is corrupted.

By rolling back to RU16 the reports remains 'corrupted', but the resaving process fix them.

Is it possible (but it is only a guess) that in RU17 you can edit the reports and remove these 'hidden' parts and make them working. But, I repeat, it is only a guess, and I have no idea on how to do it.

  • Some updates...

We have this problem in both Live and Test system, in the configured environment. In TEST we have also an Out Of Box organization wher ereports works FINE.

I copied our test database to MS, they imported into their server... and everything is working... :-/

We did additional testing, and it seems they found the issue - now they need to understand why it occurred... seems related to reporting services.

    Here last message from MS:

We understood now what is the cause of this issue: the expression is being calculated using Globals!RenderFormat.Name and Globals!RenderFormat.IsInteractive. Both variables are returning Error as a value and the expression cannot be evaluated successfully.

    The expression is:

                    <Hidden>=(Globals!RenderFormat.Name = "PDF" or Globals!RenderFormat.Name = "IMAGE" or Globals!RenderFormat.Name = "WORD" or Globals!RenderFormat.Name = "WORDOPENXML" or Globals!RenderFormat.IsInteractive)</Hidden>

I have created a second problem with Reporting Services team and they will help us to understand why these variables are not returning the correct values.

  • Further update...

It seems that the problem is related to some features used by RU17 that are available only on SQL Server 2008 R2 and higher.

We do have the problem, and our SQL Server is version 2008 SP3 (NOT R2!).

If you have the problem, could you please check the version of SQL server you have installed?

Just run a query on SQL as select @@version

  • We're on SQL 2008.

  • We are also having this exact same problem and are just running 2008 SP3. Did you ever get a resolution or is my best bet to just rollback and hope they fix it in UR18? This plus the server manager bug both hit us this UR :(

  • Hi.

The problem is with RU17 using SQL procedures available only in SQL 2008 R2.

Microsoft is working on this now, and I have no idea if and when they will fix it. I'm in contact with them, as I raised the issue, and I will inform in this topic as soon as I have any update (probably in september).

The only option you have now is to roll back to RU16.

  • To resolve this issue we upgraded our Reporting Services server from 2008 to 2012. It seemed like a more preferable solution to rolling back.
