Restore cannot find network cards RRS feed

  • Question

  • Trying to restore a machine using WHS restore CD and WHS backup of the machine.  The restore CD cannot find the network cards.

    • I copied the drivers directory from the backup to a USB drive
    • Booted the WHS restore CD
    • When page with the two list boxes, one for storage devices and one for network devices, comes up the storage device list includes all of the storage devices but did not find the network cards.
    • I push the install Devices button, put in the the USB thumb drive that has the copy of the WHS device backup directory, and push OK.
    • The app then tells me it found the devices and installed the drivers, but when it goes back to the list of network and storage devices, it has added the USB thumb drive to the storage list, but the network list is still empty.
    • I have a 3COM 3C920B based ethernet on the motherboard of the machine and installed a Xircom 100mb PCMCIA ethernet card to see if the issue was due to the specific card.  Restore finds neither of these cards, but both of them work when WHS is running.

Are there any known problems with WHS restore finding network cards?

    Thanks

    Dwight

  • Hello,
did you try to copy the folder Windows Home Server Drivers for Restore from either the PC or a backup of this PC to an USB key and used those?
This does not always work, but sometimes.

  • Dwight,

Did you ever resolve your problem. I have the same problem and I am looking for a fix.

I also tried adding a PCI network card with the same results.

I tried loading the drivers on the USB Key from the backup on the server, but it can't find the network card.

I copied just the network drivers on the usb key but that didn't work. I copied the drivers from the CD that came with the motherboard to the USB key, but that didn't work either.

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

  • Dwight,
I just wanted to say that you need to make sure that you have the *.inf file to install the network drivers. Just having the drivers present will not work.
