Change Live Mesh folder directory RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have a laptop and a computer. I take my laptop with me to school every day and my computer stays home.
I use Live Mesh to synchronize the folder where all my school documents are stored in. It's called 'School'.

    What I did:
Right-click the 'School' folder and 'Add folder to Live Mesh'.
Sync Settings; Sync with my laptop and computer (not online).
When I look at my PC, I see the folder on my desktop. Now there are two 'School' folders.
    1: on my laptop: "D:\School"
2: on my PC: at the desktop.

I want to have both folders at the path: "D:\School". (both on my laptop and my PC)
I followed these steps from the know issue list at: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/LiveMesh/thread/ed5676d9-59a4-4203-9191-d7f0d72f467b

Issue : I moved a Live Mesh folder to a new location (or renamed a Live Mesh folder) and now it's no longer synchronizing .
Workaround : Go to the Live Mesh notifier and click Manage folders ; in the Explorer window that opens, right-click on the folder that you want to synchronize again and select Sync with this device... ; in the Synchronize folder dialog box you can click Browse and select the new location of the folder .

But when I view this window. The path and the browse button are both inactive. I can't click/change them :(

How can I fix this? I just want 1 folder to sync with 2 devices at the same directory (D:\School)

    Thanks in advance,
    Cas Cornelissen.

  • You need to remove the folder from your Mesh that was added to the desktop. You do this on the Live Desktop via change sync settings to not sync with the PC where both folders exist. Once the desktop folder changes from a blue Mesh folder to a regular yellow Windows folder, you can manually copy that folder to the desired location, merging it with the existing D:\school folder, for example. Once the files and folders are copied to the new location, delete the desktop folder.
Now, back to the Live Desktop and change the folder sync settings again to sync with that PC.
When the light blue folder appears on the desktop, click it once and don't click OK, but click on the Browse button and navigate to the D:\school folder and then click OK. You will receive a warning about conflicts due to merging. If the files are the same as those on the other PC and the Live Desktop, you should not encounter any conflicts despite the warnings.

  • Hi Stephen,

This almost answered my question. The only problem is that I don't want the folder to synchronize with my Live Desktop. Only with my laptop and PC. Is it possible to do this?

    Thanks in Advance,

Yes, simply change the sync settings on the Live Desktop for that folder to *not* sync with the Live Desktop. A "shadow" folder will remain on the Live Desktop for management purposes, but no data will transfer to or through the Live Desktop for the folder.

  • When you double click the offered folder, you should be brought to the sync settings.
If it open the folder, then you've already accepted the sync location to your desktop.
Double clicking when it is faded light blue folder, being you to a windows titled:
    Synchronize folder
The text at the top of the window says "Synchronize folder with this computer."
    The name cannot be changed/
The location is the path to your desktop folder.
    Next to this is browse.
At the bottom of the Window is OK and Cancel.
OK accepts the default offered location - your desktop.
If you click OK, it will become a darker blue folder (still light blue) and it is now fixed to your desktop.

That means that you have already clicked OK and the folder is now "locked" to the desktop of the PC. You will need to change the Sync settings for the folder on the Live Desktop to not sync with that PC. When it becomes a normal Windows yellow folder, you can delete or move the folder as desired. Then change the settings on the Live Desktop to sync with that PC and it will be offered to the desktop as a light blue folder again. You will now see the options described above. In the worst case, remove the PC from the Mesh, all Mesh folders will become normal Windows folders. Uninstall and reinstall Live Mesh, the folders will be offered to the "new" PC and you can open the options on each to browse and merge.

Since you are referring to Windows Live Mesh, not Live Mesh - www.mesh.com, you are in the wrong forum.

For discussion of the new Windows Live Mesh (formerly Sync), (as well as the released Live Sync version) go here:

    http://windowslivehelp.com/forums.aspx?productid=24

However, I believe that this is a bug in the new version. If the source folder is at the root of the drive, you can't change the destination. If the source is within another folder on the source PC, you should be able to specify the destination location. I don't know when this will be fixed.
