Ambiquity between documentation regarding Data Migration Framework RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm looking into using the Data Migration Framework but seem to have come across an inconsistency between various documentations:

In the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Implementation Guide, in Planning Guide -> System Requirements and Required Components -> Data Migration Manager software requirements -> Requirements and recommendations -> "Build point 3" it states:

"We do not recommend that you install the Data Migration Manager on a computer that is running Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server. Uninstalling the Data Migration Manager from Microsoft Dynamics CRM will cause the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Asynchronous Processing Service to become unregistered."

However, in files dmfreadme.htm in the Data Migration Framework download it states under requirements:

The Data Migration Pack must be installed on a server that has Microsoft CRM installed.

Therefore, which one should be done? Should the Data Migration Manager be installed on the CRM server or not?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Do not install it on the CRM server. I have installed it on my laptop and other workstations other than the CRM server and has worked perfectly.

  • The Data Migration Manager can be installed on the CRM server or any other computer. When you install it you will have the option to use SQL Express for its database or a SQL Server. It will also create an asyncrhonous processing service.

I have used DMM on a CRM server with no ill effect and installed on a separate computer.

My implementation guide (rev 4.5.0) says this about DMM:

This Data Migration Manager must be installed on a computer that has a network connection to the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server.
