Strange Message "This copy of Windows is not activated" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello out there,

I have a strange problem. At first I have to say, that I use Windows XP Pro with a localized language so I will translate all messages for this post. Therefore they might not be exactly the same as they will look on an english Windows XP version.

O.K.: My Problem is that I just formatted my harddisc and reinstalled Windows XP Pro from a source where I have integrated all Service Packs and hotfixes. Everything was fine.

After the installation I activated Windows via internet. Everything was still fine.

Now ... two weeks later I get the message: "This copy of Windows is not activated. This Copy has to be activated according to the licence policies" (Sorry; I can't translate better).

However. This notification only pops up while I see the logon or the logoff screen. Windows seems to work fine.
I can't use "activate Windows" because it is activated; If i start "msoobe /a" I see a screen: "Windows is already activated, you may now close this Window" and all WGA-Test-Tools attest me a working WGA-System and a valid, activated Windows.

Now ... what's wrong ? Any ideas ? I want to get rid of this strange Notification.

  • Lyris,

Unfortunately, the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) support forum is able to provide support in English only.  The following URL:  http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx will help make sure you receive the appropriate support information for your location by selecting your region from the drop down list provided and then clicking the arrow button. This will help in case there are any language translations lost.

Also please Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:
    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

Have a great day and thank you for visiting the WGA Forum.

I have a similar problem. I have activated my copy of Windows XP Pro, but when "locked" it displays the "This copy of Windows is not activated" WGA dialog. I performed the steps you mentioned, and this is my result.
