  • Question

  • I bought a toshiba laptop from a rent to own place.

It initially had a version of XP home, I  only know this because it has a XP home product key sticker on the bottom, but when I purchased it a version of Windows Vista was installed. The company said they upgraded the machine..

I've started getting errors with activation, ultimately locking up the computer so then I have to reformat. Reformating works until it needs to be activated again. A friend gave me a program that reads computer registries so I used it and wrote down what the registry recognized as the vista product key that goes with my machine.

I tried using that key tonight when I was asked to validate my product key and it says it is wrong. I ran diagnostics and get this:

I don't know what to do since I don't have a product key sticker for the Vista software and the rent to own place only gave me a reformatting disk which just reinstalls vista without me having to enter a product key. They've said they don't have a product key to give me since all they do is use the same disk they gave me.

Any advice on what to do?
