Genuine Windows with VLK but still the message !!! RRS feed

    Hi everyone!

At my company we still have an issue with the validation. This is only for computers in remote offices which have slower Internet connections. The problem persists for a few months and we are doing all the Windows updates by a server on the Intranet.

The issue is that before the log-in screen we get a "Windows Product Activation" window with the message:

"The product Key used to install Windows is invalid. Please contact your ...".

We use the same VLK licence on all our computers. We use Windows XP SP2 on a network domain.

I've already done this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916247 (but I don't have an error code)

and the guided help found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312295/en-us

The result was that Windows is already activated, but still got the same annoying message.

After doing the MGA diagnostic ("resolve" button is not available, but Windows seems to be genuine for this utility) I get this:

  • Hello Robert,

At this point I would highly suggest contacting your licensing agent at Microsoft regarding this issue, from what I can see your product key is good and genuine so there should be no reason that you are seeing these messages.  They will be able to further look into your licensing to see if there may be any other underlining issues with your license/key that may cause some computers not to validate.  Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

  • Hello Robert,

Do these numbers match the last 15 digits of the product key for Windows you are using on the machines that are having issues: JH9K3-BPF7B-GDMC3?  Also for us to fully troubleshoot the issue you are having we will need you to atleast run the MGA diagnostic tool on one machine that is having issues and post the results here so we may see what is causing the failed validation.

    Thank you,

    Thank You for your reply!

Yes this is our VLK (we have now a newer one), but a few hundreds computers have this key and only those in remote offices have this problem.

And I've posted the actual result of MGA diagnostics from one of the computers with the annoying message.

I can post the result from a computer with no problem, if you want a comparison.

Very early versions of the WGA Notifications Utility sometimes had problems as you describe.

I noticed in your report that this particular system does have an early version:

    Version: 1.5.540.0
    WgaTray.exe Signed By: Microsoft
    WgaLogon.dll Signed By: Microsoft

A more current version would display these results:

    File Exists: Yes
    Version: 1.7.18.7
    WgaTray.exe Signed By: Microsoft
    WgaLogon.dll Signed By: Microsoft

Can you use this link to try a manual installation of the latest WGA Notifications utility?

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=78651

    Restart the computer.

After which, visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/default.aspx?displaylang=en&sGuid=9dd0c2b6-c406-4488-81c0-9a13f77832ae and run the diagnostics to verify all is as it should be.

Post back to let us know if it worked for you.

  • Nope, it didn't work for us.

I tried to use the utility to change the key, but it didn't work, either: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/pkuinstructions.aspx

If I use the new VLK licence I get the message: "The product key entered is not valid key for this system. Please check it for typing errors and try again"

If I use the OEM key on the computer case I get "The product key could not be updated on your computer. This may be due to technical difficulties or network connectivity issues."

Our Microsoft partner didn't want to support previous VLK licences, so they want that we use the Volume Licence Key  that they provided to us. But as I said, I can't change to the new VLK.

Maybe we must reinstall Windows XP on all the computers that have this issue, but this will be some work to do.

Thanks again to all people that tried to help.

    Robert
