Second WHS - what to do with old server RRS feed

  • Question

  • I bought a new HP EX495 and it will replace my HP 470(?) model. Can I use the old WHS simply as an external backup/server unit? Is there anything I'd need to do other than just connecting an ethernet cable to it and having it show up as an external hard drive? Would I still be able to access the control panel on the old unit and keep shared folders turned on?

  • You can leave the shared folders available.
Some functions can only be used on one WHS in the network - so clients can only be backed up to one WHS, and the Connector software connects also only to one server.
Also Remote Access will only work for one WHS (if you have only one connection to the Internet).
A workaround for the management part is to use Remote Desktop to connect to the old server with the account Administrator and the console password and run the console from that desktop. A virtual PC connected to the old server would be the other method.
