Accessing WHS From Behind SBS 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, looking for some assistance please.

I have a SBS 2008 doamin at home, SSL & RWW are obviosly forwarded to the SBS box, I also have my domain name pointing to my SBS box. Is there a way I can access my WHS box through the SBS box by say using https://***domain-name.co.uk/whs this way the SBS2008 box would get the request and then forward to the WHS box using preferably HTTP.

I am greatfull for any help over this matter as I just cant seem to get it to work and SBS2008 is fairly new to me.

    Regards John

  • Hi John,
    this is not possible.
But you could manually forward additional ports in the router (i.e. 81 and 444), so that they point to ports 80 (if wanted) and 443 on the WHS.
So you could reach your server by
    https://***domain-name.co.uk:444.
You can (or maybe need to, I am not sure here) also alter these ports in the IIS configuration on the WHS and forward them directly. The only port which cannot be changed that way is 4125 for remote access to the console.

  • Hi Olaf,

Thanks for that, and to be honest I was thinking that might be my only answer but, is it not possible to fully disable SSL for the WHS? I ask this as I did disable it for the default website and can HTTP to the WHS fine but, when I attempt to access the web photo share it seems to try to access it over SSL even though as far as I am concerned i have disabled SSL.

If I can access the WHS through HTTP then this would cure my problem as I dont access anything over HTTP on the SBS box.

  • Hi John,
since this directly interfers with the security (and vulneribility against attacks from the Internet), I don't assume that this is a possible scenario, and even if some components would work, others will be hard coded for the use of https. Not to forget the side effects of any WHS related upgrade.
