Unable to initialize the viewer.... RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recieve this message when trying to "Launch the Lab" for workshop 4260:

"Unable to initialize the viewer. If you have installed the viewer to your computer, please rerun the setup program. If you are accessing the viewer from a server, please contact your system administrator."

Upon reading knowledge base article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917583 I was instructed to install a patch, however there are two problems.

I have never installed the software this patches and if wanted to install it - it was discontinued two years ago.

I have since downloaded the E-Learning offline player, and this has not resolved the issue.

If anyone has experienced this problem, or knows a way to resolve the issue, I would be very much obliged.

    Kind regards,

    Neil H

  • I went through the exact same sequence with identical results.  I guess we have to wait for Microsoft to come to work.

  • I too get the same error "Unable to initialize the viewer. If you have installed the viewer to your computer, please re-run the Setup program. If you are accessing the viewer from a server, please contact your System Administrator." when I click "Resume This Course" button in Course 5251.

Everything was working on Friday and I did not change anything in my laptop on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Same problem as many have posted, "Unable to initialize the viewer. If you have installed the viewer to your computer, please re-run the Setup program. If you are accessing the viewer from a server, please contact your System Administrator".

For me it is with all courses in course collections:
Collection 5347: Installing and Configuring Windows Vista
Collection 5354: Configuring Windows Vista Networking and Security
Collection 5360: Configuring Windows Vista Applications and Devices

Tried it on multiple computers and had others I work with that are taking the same course try it all with the same result.

Other courses did work for me such as course 6143: Installing and Configuring Microsoft Internet Information Services 7.0.

Hopefully they will get this fixed soon.

  •  It has been brought to my attention that there were indeed problems with the offline viewer the past few days.  I have received word from the team that supports the offline viewer that these issues were addressed as of this morning.

If you are still having problems, please contact me at learnmgr@microsoft.com and I will put you in touch with the team that supports this offline player.

    Thanks!
