Access Mapped Drives RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I am kind of new to networking, VPNs, & my server.  When I am at home, I have some of my folders on my server mapped as a network drive.  This makes it easy to save directly to the server through programs such as Microsoft Word. Is there a way, and if so whats the easier & most efficient way, that I can connect to those drives while I am away from my LAN, like at school.  I want to be able to save the notes I type directly to my server's folders while I am at school. Can this be done?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Doing so isn't supported, and there are security considerations that make it not the best idea. The supported method is to use the Remote Access web site to upload/download files.

An alternative is the Web Folders for WHS add-in, which uses WebDAV to allow you access to your shares from afar. WebDAV opens up additional potential for security issues, however, and I don't believe the add-in is actively maintained at this point, so you use it "at your own risk".

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
