Is there a minimum broadband speed? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Live Mesh is installed  on my HP Pavilion desktop and Acer One netbook, and it appeared to work properly when I tested it.  On holiday last week, the netbook appeared to connect OK to the desktop and the banner at the top of the screen said "you are connected to desktop".  But instead of the expected desktop screen, all I got was a black screen.  I think this was due to the speed of the connection.  My tests at home were over a connection running at 9-10 Mbps but the holiday connection was at about 0.5 Mbps.

Has anyone else had this sort of experience?  Does Live Mesh need a minimum connection speed?  The Live Mesh user requirements simply says that a broadband connection is needed without saying what sort of speed is needed.

  • Thanks for another quick reply, Steve - I'm sorry I can't match you!

I think you must be right that it's a problem driver.  I looked at the logs and there was some mention of drivers not loading.  (I can't quite remember the wording now.  In a fit of brainless optimism, I later used "Add/Remove Programs" to do a repair on Live Mesh on the pc and of course I lost the logs relating to the times the black screen happened.  Doh ... )

The best thing now is probably to do an uninstall/re-install and see if that helps.

  • You can even use the remote desktop over  a dial-up connection, but it would be horribly slow. Have you tried to connect again? The black screen on connect problem is often due to the driver not loading properly on the machine you are connecting to. Sometimes a reconnnect attempt resolves it. Other times you need to reboot that machine. If the problem persists, I suggest submitting a bug report per the instructions here:

How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs

Note that you probably won't get a response to the bug report, though. It will be transferred to the internal system to be assigned to the appropriate development group.

  • Thanks for the quick reply, Steve.  I tried a few times to connect while I was on holiday - my netbook and I were in Spain and the desktop was in England - but without success.   A reboot of the desktop would have been impractical because it was unattended.

Everything connected again OK when I got home.

If connection speed is ruled out, might it be the power settings used on the desktop?  I didn't like the idea of leaving the desktop running continuously while I was away for a week (Luddite!) so I set it to come out of standby for two hours every evening.  The idea was to create a convenient window during which I could connect to the desktop if I needed to.

    Thanks again

  • It may have been that it was awake, but in low power mode. Though, it may well have simply been a problem with the driver. I've experienced the black screen connection on the local LAN between PCs. And, even worse, a totally black screen on the "remote" PC at the PC itself *after* logging out of Live Mesh remote desktop, so that the only solution was to reboot the PC in order to actually see the screen. That's clearly a misbehaving driver in the latter case, so I think it is the same with what you encountered.

  • You're welcome, David. If you did a repair, then I'd not worry about a reinstall at this point. If you absolutely need to have remote access and can't risk the problem happening again, consider installing Windows Live Sync - http://sync.live.com - and configure the desktop/home PC to allow remote desktop connections. Live Sync also allows remote desktop connections and does not conflict with Live Mesh.
