How do you add Mirroring to a disk? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have WHS 2011 installed in an HP EX495.  It has three physical hard disks, Disk 0 is 1.0TB, Disk 1 is 1.5TB and Disk2 is 1.0TB.  I create mapped drives on my PC's to Disk 1, (second disk), and I want to mirror it on Disk 2.  I understand disk 2 is smaller in size so I will keep my eye on it's percent fill.  When I start Server Manager after RDCing into the server and I right click on Disk 2, Add Mirror is greyed out.  How do I get it un-greyed so I can start the wizard to have it mirror Disk 1?

  • What you want to do isn't possible. You need two disks of the same size for mirroring, or (if you don't use disks of the same size) you need to set up the mirror prior to creating volumes on the disks, and you need to accept that excess space on the larger disk won't be used.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks Ken.  I placed an order for another 1.5TB disk today.

  • Note that it is a great deal easier to get this to work if you build your mirror before you put data on the disk. You'll find that everything you will need to do is documented on Technet.

  • Ken, do you have a link to the Technet information on mirroring?
