Hello, I was told to post here. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Nice way to introduce myself, eh? Anyway, I was having trouble with my windows validation/activation thing, and a microsoft person (no idea what their title is - some meaningless jumble of words) told me to run a WGA Diagnostic Tool thing, and post the results here.

Basically, this disk won't let me re-install windows after a complete restart from formatting the hard drive.

    So here you go:

  • Contact the manufacturer of your computer and ask them to send you the proper Windows XP reinstallation, recovery, or restore CD that was designed for the computer originally.

  • Please read and post the description labeling or wording of the CD you used to install Windows XP.

Are you have problems activating Windows?  The log file you included shows that your copy of Windows hasn't been activated.  In order for you to validate a copy of Windows it needs to be activated first.

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • Sorry, yes, it is activation I'm having trouble with.

Edit: The CD face says "For distribution for a new PC, The Certificate of Authenticity label should be..." etc. It then tells me I am not allowed to be a naughty boy and make illegal copies of the disk.

Then it says "Version 2002", and then follows some copyright information. Finally, there's some text that says "0601 Part No. X08-33941"

...and there are lots of pretty shiny pictures and microsoft logo. Oh, and a hologrammy type thing.

  • If you are unable to activate via the internet, you'll need to "activate by phone" to obtain an activation code....takes about 5 minutes.

  • I tried via the internet, and it fails. It also fails by phone (I tried twice) but I had no credit left at the end of the second one so never got put through to the microsoft call centre person. When I do get put through to them, am I just going to be told to buy a new Windows CD or are they likely to give me a new code?

  • Dale46:

You should be able to get the product key activated by calling in as long as the product key being used is legitimate.

  • You'll be given a new activation code free of charge as long as the Product Key used to install Windows XP with is genuine and legitimate.

  • Hm. It appears the version of windows from this disk may have been installed on another computer and activated there... could that present a problem? The disk is legit as is the CoA on the side of my PC, but I'm not now sure if they came together, sort of thing, with what the person who buys our PCs has just told me.

    Oh dear.

  • Try the following: Visit http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html  and download the free Belarc Advisor on your computer. After running the program, look under the section titled "Software Licenses" to find the Product Key used on your computer.
