  • Question

  • I just received WHS today, and I am trying to install it on my computer, but when I get to the step to name the server, no matter what name I put in, whether it is just the letter "a" or whether it is something longer like "Home server" I get the error "A computer with this name already exists on your home network. Please provide a unique Home Server Name to continue."  Why does it always give me this error?

  • Try disconnecting your server from your network during installation.

  • Well now I feel like I should have known to do that. They [Microsoft] should really put that in the installation instructions. It would have made this go a lot faster. Thanks!

It's rarely needed, and Windows Home Server isn't intended for installation by the user. It's really intended that a system builder or OEM install it, then deliver it to the user.
