Win10 problem with opening URL from QR scanner

    Question

  • I'm working part time as a coder and tech assistant for my friends' company. They bought a new Acer Aspire Switch 10E running Windows 10, and one of the main things their employees need to do is to scan QR codes. So I installed a QR code reader, but ran into most strange problem:

I have a valid QR-code, which decodes as "http://192.168.0.7" - at that URL there is the company's local server running their internal stuff. Now, the QR scanner succesfully scans the code, but fails to launch the default browser to open in. But it should all be set up fine, as it succesfully opens other qr-codes which have 'ordinary' URLs like 'http://www.erkkalehmus.fi'

If I manually copy the URL from the QR scanner, and paste it to the browser, it opens it all fine.

I opened Windows 10 command line, and typed "start http://192.168.0.7" -again, no problem, it succesfully opens the default browser with correct URL.

I have tried with three different QR scanners (Scan, paid for it. And two free apps), and three different browsers (Edge, Firefox, Chrome). The company has been using these same QR-codes for months, smoothly with an android device. But now with this brand new device operating Win10 I'm totally stuck with this kind of simple task. And out of ideas.

I don't even know where to ask for solution - is this a problem with win10 systemwide settings, or a spesific problem with those qr scanner apps, or something else?

  • I'd probably follow up with the hardware vendors (acer / qr) You can ask general windows questions here. (also by default Edge would be called in windows 10 so this might be an issue) They'll help you over here to change the default.

    or for Edge browser

  • Thank you for your reply! I had already posted the same question on acer forums, and also on general windows10 forums. Someone from the general forums suggested me to post here =)

Today I installed qr-code reader extension to Chrome. That scans the code succesfully, and opens the URL in new tab with no problem.

So it seems that for some reason there is a problem with qr-code scanner apps opening certain kind of URLs. It is strange that all three apps fail on this - either they all have the same bug, or then there is some system setting interfering. Well, but so far I am good with Chrome extension workaround =)
