validation tool

  Sorry, I have searched all posts and can not find an answer....Grandmother at work...I want to download windows media player to my new system, windows 8, 64 bit....I think....system tells me I must download a player for windows xp, fine....won't validate because I am not running windows xp.....get the message on all other validation tool downloads that this particular tool is out of date and to download the most current...what is the most current....and where is it....?  I purchased my system from office depot, am sure that my windows is valid.....everything seems to be a big deal..help please.
