This copy of windows is not genuine Build 7601

Question
-
This started this morning. I was watching the news on my tuner card. The background turned black and a popup told me windows was not genuine. Purchased the oem version disc from Newegg a month ago. Does this mean something glitched and I will need to do a fresh install?

At this point I think it would be just as easy to backup my files to an ext hd and perform a fresh install. If a glitch caused this much trouble, it could happen again. Seeing how many other posts there are here with similar issues, you have your hands full. I do thank you and your team for the assistance in trying to solve this problem. Thank you again.

When I tried to reactivate it it gave an error: "A problem occured when Windows tried to activate. Error Code 0x8007000D."
Edit: I just ran sfc and it told me it found errors but couldn't fix them. Should I post that log file here also?

You can't post files here - but you can upload them to your public SkyDrive and post a link.
As far as your 8007000D error is concerned...
See if this helps

I tried the microsoft fixit but I get the same error when trying to activate after rebooting. I uploaded the cbs.log from running sfc. Here is the link- https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=7E13BBD5AED7C287!106&authkey=!AEsH_YWY0eAQeCk
Let me know if it doesn't work. This is starting to look like a critical error that can only be fixed with a format and reinstall of the os. Thank you for your time.

Nah - with any luck it'll be easy :).
Interesting SFC log, that.
There is an error in there -
2012-09-24 20:16:01, Info CSI 000002ed [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:22{11}]"msvcr90.dll" of Microsoft.VC90.CRT, Version = 9.0.30729.4940, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_INTEL (0), Culture neutral, VersionScope neutral, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b}, Type = [l:10{5}]"win32", TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch
Which the system claims to have repaired, but which as far as I can tell, it shouldn't have been able to.
It also did a fair amount of other cleanup work.
Please run another SFC and post the new log - it may show something new.
(Meanwhile, I'll see if I can come up with a repair procedure if the error repeats as I expect it to.)

I'm running this via remote desktop from work. I ran sfc again and it now says "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". Here is the log file- https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=7E13BBD5AED7C287!108&authkey=!AEWkI8ES8h_jMi8
Thank you for your time and help with this.

I'd have expected the 8007000d error to show up with other errors than the Invalid Data in slmgr.vbs - I suspect that this means that permissions for some files or folders (or registry entries) are mangled, or that some have been set to read-only status
Please run the following commands, and post the results.

ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\Networkservice

Each of the icacls commands gave me "Successfully processed 1 files: Failed processing 0 files".
The dir command gave me
c:\windows\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash64_11_4_402_265.ocx
c:\windows\system32\restore\MachineGuid.txt

Sorry - I actually need to see the output from the ICACLS commands :)
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Sorry. Wasn't aware that you could copy and paste within a command prompt.

That seems to be normal as well.
It sounds as if the problem is registry permissions or corruption.
The trick is going to be to find out where :(
Do you fancy a long haul, or would you rather do a repair install? - check out the procedures here....

'your team'?? I wish:)
I'm a user, just as you are - the only MS 'resident' in these forums was let go at the end of July. I just happen to have read a few thousand MGADiag reports, and fixed many of them one way or another (and hopefully getting better at it all the time)
When you consider the number of Win7 installations, the failure rate is really extraordinarily low - at least the ones that make it to the forums, anyhow. There are/have been over 630million legitimate Win7 installations according to the latest figures - and we see about 20-30 cases a week in this forum, many caused by either malware or Registry 'cleaners', and many also caused by truly non-genuine installs. The latter seem to be falling off currently - at one time they were possibly 30-40% of the threads here, now the number is down to about 10% (from memory). If you add another 50 or so a week in the Answers forums, and about 20 a week in one of the larger independent forums, and it's still only around 100 per week in English (although we do get a number of language installations here, the work is conducted in English), out of perhaps 200 million. Repeat custom is almost nil :) (I can only think of two cases - one caused by a triumph of hope over reality in purchasing from eBay, and the other by attempting to install variations of Activation Exploits into the same machine)
As for the number of counterfeit installs - who knows? - but I wouldn't be at all surprised if it totalled more than 100million worldwide, mostly in 3rd world countries, but a significant number in 1st world countries as well. For obvious reasons, most of those will avoid coming here if they actually know about the counterfeit, but we see a number of people who have been screwed by 'repair shops', or a friend's efforts, and have no idea until we tell them that they have a counterfeit.
...it's late, and I'm rambling!
Good luck!

I thought you worked for MS. I'm nearly finished with the install. I usually wait a day after to make sure it's working properly before I activate. I've been using Wise Registry Cleaner on 32-bit for several years without trouble. I'm not sure if that may have caused this on 64-bit. I've run across several other programs that have caused conflicts. Moving to 64-bit has been a new learning experience.Thursday, September 27, 2012 12:20 AM

There is NO SUCH THING as a safe registry cleaner. They are all snake-oil products and WILL break your system sooner or later - as you have just found out.
Wise is no better than any of the others - and unless it's constantly updated can be a lot worse (and I have no idea how often they actually bother with updates)
