The Product key you used is a volume key that has been blocked by Microsoft RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a used computer about a year ago and it came with a copy of XP Pro, and had a product key sticker on the tower. My kids downloaded a virus last week, so I used the disc that came with the computer to re-install XP pro. The sound no longer works, so I was trying to update the drivers for Sound Blaster 0220, and do the windows updates to see if that corrected the problem of "No Audio Device." When I went to update windows, microsoft asked me to install something to validate my copy of XP pro. I did, and was informed "The product key used to activate Windows on your PC is a volume license key that has been blocked by Microsoft." I'd like to know what I can do to validate the version so I can update the computer.

Also, If you have any suggestions as to fixing the sound, I'd appreciate it.

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

What does the COA sticker on the tower say, exactly? (do NOT post the Key!)

  • Hello youngnchamp,

Your Sony computer has volume licensing installations of both Windows XP Pro and Office Enterprise 2007.  The Windows installation is reporting as a blocked volume licensing product key, and no doubt the Office product key has been pirated.

Order a set of Recovery Discs from Sony here https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/index.jsp to put your computer back to out-of-the-box condition, loaded with Genuine Windows.  Enter the model number VGN-FJ270 in the search box at the upper right to see the parts available---recovery discs are $17.95 + shipping.

  • Hi Darin,

From the other threads it seems you may have the answer to my problem...I have a second hand desktop using windows XP....I am unable to do updates leading me to suspect that the OS software is not genuine..(there is no XP label on the tower) I get the following diagnostic report given below. If my validation licence is not genuine I am quite happy to purchase a genuine version but I wish to avoid a re-installation as I will lose installed programmes etc...is there a way to purchase a licence without doing a reinstall of the OS? any help much appreciated.

    regards

Please - do not piggy-back on other's threads, as it only leads to confusion.

Having said that, your Installation of Windows is indeed a non-genuine Volume License.

If you can get hold of a genuine Full XP Pro disk and Key (NOT an Upgrade), you can use that, together with the Product Key Update tool to change the current installation to the genuine Key and activate that.

Note however, that genuine new packs for XP Pro are very rare - and that packs offered on eBay and such sites are more likely than not to be counterfeit. Make sure of your vendor before spending your cash!
Your motherboard appears to have been manufactured in 2008 - which suggests that it's probably quite capable of running Win7, and that is one avenue that you should at least consider.

Please also note that your installation of Office is of a version that is only sold in bulk to orgnisations for use in their own machines (or sold through the HUP program). If you bought this copy retail, then it also is counterfeit.

  • Hi Darin,

thanks for the swift response...apologies for the piggy back..

I am not sure from your reply whether (if I find a copy of XP Pro of which I am fond) I can get a genuine key without reinstalling and thus losing the applications loaded on the OS....which is what I would like to do...and presumably loading Windows 7 will certainly mean I lose all apps for which I don't have disks and will have to re download from the internet.

Please clarify..thanks for help to date.

IF you can get a genuine Full Retail copy of XP Pro you should be able to use the Key from that together with the Product Key Update tool to make the current install genuine.

Yes, installing Win 7 would mean a clean install (which would be required anyhow, even if the XP was genuine).
