  • Question

  • Windows has discovered a change that will result in limited Windows functionality. It gives me two options: Learn more online (Which resuts in an error pop-up) and Close (Which logs me off the computer and back to choosing a User)

My whole back screen is white and that pop is the only thing shown. The only reason I can get onto the internet is because a Norton Protection pops up as well a few minutes later telling me to update (I haven't used this laptop since the problem began)

Any help would be very much appreciated! Please and thank you.

Here is my Diagnostic Report as well.

I really don't know what that means. ): Malware found 5 things and I deleted them, but AV didn't.

OK - that sounds about par for the course.
I can't really go into the details of this type of thing in these forums (I suspect it may be against rules, but it'd certainly take waaay too long for either of us), so I think the best thing for you to do at this stage is to ask for (hopefully no-cost) support from MS - make sure that when you fill in the forms that you state either Activation problem, or WGA problem -

  • Just as a last resort option: since the computer wasn't used for over 6 months or so, it's unlikely there are any vital files or data that needs to be saved. If so, the quickest (and probably easiest) resolution may be to just reinstall Windows using the System Recovery software included in the PC.

System Recovery will restore the PC's software and Windows back to factory state (you loss all saved data and you will need to reinstall any programs that didn't originally come with the PC).

Note: Each manufacturer implements their System Recovery (or whatever they name it) in a different way so look in the directions that came with the PC, look on the manufacture's web site or contact the manufacturer directly for assistance in using their system recovery.

    Hope that helps,

    Darin MS

Phew! - there's a fair amount of stuff  in the SPSys.log - which is unusual and potentially worrying, but let's worry about the actual error messages first, as it may sort that out as well....

You have a number of problems here, which may or may not be inter-dependent.
The Software Licensing service is not running, because of the other issues (this is normal), under the circumstances.
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\gdi32.dll[6.0.6001.18159], Hr = 0x800b0100
     - this indicates that the file found by the Software Licensing Service when it checked, was not the same as it expected it to be in some way.
    TTS Error: M:20110109002330936-
You have a Mod Auth Tamper present - which first made its mark today (lots more later)
Cached Online Validation Code: N/A, hr = 0x80070426
You attempted Validation at some point and it failed with this error message, which, if I'm reading it right, simply means that the Software Licensing Service has stopped.

    Back to the Mod-Auth tamper....
Vista is in, what we call a 'Mod-Auth' Tamper state.  There are 2 types of Mod-Auth tampers.

    1)    A critical system file was modified On Disk - What this means is that the file, located on the hard drive, was modified in some way. This can be caused by a malicious program (spyware, malware, virus) or by manual file modification (by a user of the system). There is also a very small chance that an Update may fail in mid-update and cause this type of issue. As a safety mechanism, Updates are made so that if they fail, they roll back any updating that was done before the failure, but there is an off-chance that the roll back did not occur.

    2)    A critical system file was modified In Memory - What this means is the file itself (on the hard drive) is un-modified, but the code, from that file, running in the system, was modified in some way and is caused by a running program that is incompatible with Vista.

Because there is a Mismatched file listed under the "File Scan Data-->" line of your Diagnostic Report, we know that your issue is an On Disk Mod-Auth  tamper.

In your Diagnostic report above, you can see the line that starts with 'TTS Error:' followed by a bunch numbers: M:20110109002330936-
This is the Tamper Time Stamp and it breaks down like this:

(year)  (month) (day) (time in 24format) (millisecond)
    M:2011    01        09        0023                    30936        -

Now that you know the time of the tamper,
you have an idea of when the actual problem started - somewhere within 72 hours before that time.
We already know the name of the file involved - gdi32.dll, but at this point it's not needed.
Did you install any new drivers or programs in that time-frame? (If so, uninstall them if you can). Did you get any Virus warnings?

To fix the problem, first try System Restore - to a point about 3 days before the Tamper stamp.
(so late Jan 5th would be a good one).
Once the Restore is complete, reboot again, and see if the problem has gone. Run the  MGADiag tool, and see if the Mod-Auth tamper error has gone, and whether anything new has cropped up - is the Software Licensing service now running?

Post back with the new report, and we'll take another look at it.

(I had to repost this response, as you deleted your earlier attempts - please don't do that! <g>)

  • Sorry! When I went to check up on my earlier attempt it didn't show so I thought it wasn't posted. After posting this one up I saw it and didn't want to be double posting. I haven't used this laptop since 7/16/2010. Should I be restoring to that day?

    Yikes! - six months?
If you're certain that the computer hasn't been used in the interim it's worth a go
(or even to a couple of days before)

  • Yes, I know. ): My sister gave me this computer and I never used it while it was broken. Should I do the 16th? There was a problem then too. Or should I try to find a date where the laptop was alright?

  • Actually, the earliest date is 6/29/2010 and my sister tells that she was having some trouble then too. Oh and thank you for your help, Noel! I am very grateful.

In that case, I suspect that we'd better avoid System Restore - and possibly anything else until we've established some sort of stability in the system
My first thought is to eliminate malware:-
Update the Antivirus (there IS one installed?) - if it's out-of- license, then uninstall it, and run the manufacturer's removal tool to get rid of the inevitable dross it leaves behind, then install one of the free AV's.
Since you can't install MSE (because you can't validate), I'd use Avast! - again, update it immediately after install.
Then run a full system scan with that.
Download, install, update and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (www.malwarebytes.org) - the free version - and do a Quick scan.  Remove everything it finds (reboot, repeat, until it finds nothing)

Once the machine is clean, (it should also have finished updates as far as it's going to until we get it fixed), reboot again.
The run the System File Checker to try and repair the damaged system files
To use the System File Checker
    Click on Start
    in the Search box, type
    CMD.EXE
wait for the system to find what should be the only file related, and right-click on it - select Run As Administrator.
Accept the UAC prompt if you get one, and then in the window that comes up, type

    SFC   /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key
wait for the scan to finish - it'll take a while - and then reboot, twice!

run the MGADiag report again, and post back with the new report.

OK - Unfortunately, nothing has really changed in the report (did either the AV or MalwareBytes find anything?)
The next ting to try would be to replace the gdi32.dll file with one from another working Vista machine (at SP1 level - the SP2 one has a very different version number), or pull it off a Vista SP1 disk.

You may have to do this using a CD boot disk such as Bart PE or UBCD4Windows - but try it in safe mode first, if you don't have anything like that to hand.

OK - that sounds about par for the course.
I can't really go into the details of this type of thing in these forums (I suspect it may be against rules, but it'd certainly take waaay too long for either of us), so I think the best thing for you to do at this stage is to ask for (hopefully no-cost) support from MS - make sure that when you fill in the forms that you state either Activation problem, or WGA problem -
    Start here

Alright, well thank you for trying to help! It was greatly appreciated. I'll contact support.

Sorry it wasn't a quick fix - hopefully MS will be able to get you sorted out quickly.
Please let us know how you get on - and the solution (if you can make notes along the way that would be great - but not at the cost of getting your PC sorted ASAP!)

    Darin MS
