The problem you are having is you are not initially booting from the Windows XP CD.  In order to boot from the Windows XP CD, you must open the BIOS and set the CD drive as the first bootable drive.  Then save the CMOS settings, insert your Windows XP CD in the drive and you'll soon see a message to "press any key to boot from the CD".

  • Billpenny,

What you are trying to do, which is an inplace upgrade/repair, cannot be done when the installed XP is Pro and the new XP is Home.  In effect you are trying to go "backwards."

You will have to back up or otherwise save/offload user data and do a clean installation of your new genuine XP Home, then put your data back onto the new installation of XP.

Definitely a PITA, but there's no way around it.  If you had an bogus XP Home and wanted to install XP Pro, you could do it just like you want to.

  • In order to install Windows XP Home Edition, you'll have to perform a "clean install" as outlined in the following article:

I don't have a flopy drive, and if i went out and got a flopy drive, where can i find the disks?

I would realy like a CD to use to wipe the bogus XP pro, so I can get on with my life.

  • Billpenny,

The XP Home's Setup has the ability to repartition and reformat the hard disk on your computer.

Have a look at this page:  http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

Read the first section for background, and when you get to the second section entitled Step-by-Step: Clean installing Windows XP (Interactive Setup)
    follow the steps.

First, physically disconnect from the internet.

If your computer boots from an SATA hard disk, look for the F6 prompt almost immediately and then press F6.  You will be asked to provide a driver later.  (You mentioned that you don't have a floppy drive, so if you do have an SATA disk whose controller requires a separate driver, this will present a problem beyond the scope of this forum.)

At Step 1 you may be asked if you want to repair the existing installation of XP.  Bypass this by pressing ESC.

At Step 5 you will be presented with a list of partitions.  Delete all partitions except small unlettered partitions which may be manufacturer-supplied recovery or diagnostic partitions.  Since the partitions being deleted contain an OS, you will have to endure several Are You Sure questions.

Once partitions are deleted, make a new one onto which you will install XP Home.

Step 6 formats the partition you made in the file system of choice.  Choose NTFS but not quick, unless you have a reason to choose FAT32.

The rest of the Steps and Setup are pretty much a mundane task.

Let us know how it goes...

  • Billpenny,

Are you booting the computer from the CD?

Are you hitting ESC when asked if you want to repair?

  • I went into BIOs and made the ajustments, I get the message "press any key to boot from the CD"

But nothing happens and it logs in normally.

my comp is kinda new even tho I got it used so it has all the newer stuff in it.

Is it possable I need to dumb down some settings and make it seem like its not a newer version or somthing, Im reaching now...

  • If you got the "press any key to boot from the CD" message then you are on the right track.  Did you press a key?  You want to boot from the CD so that you can run the install and not boot up the installed version of XP.

  • I have legit cd's for home 2 of them purchased when xp was new.

one on my dell laptop and one not used right now and the oem that come with my Gateway laptop. so three legit xp home installs

Xp pro ( not legit )installed on them right now

why do I have to format and reinstall everything just to go legit?

     Don't really need pro

Makes me not want to even try

    Updates. try auto patcher

Lower your prices 100$ for pro and 60$ for home would be fair and users would not feel so taken advantage of. How much richer does Bill Gates want to be
