Follow the procedure outlined in this article: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_upgrade_clean.asp
Afterward , you'll need to "activate by phone".
1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in: slui.exe 4
2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
3. Select your Country.
4. Follow the instructions for phone activation.
5. Once completed, restart your computer.
6. Then visit http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/ and click Validate Windows.

Apparently, you have not entered a product key for Windows Vista Ulimate. The product key shown in your MGA report is the universal temporary product key that allows you to install Vista and use it for 30 days. Have you tied to enter your product key? Do you have an "upgrade" or "full version" product key for Vista Ultimate?

I upgraded from XP recently with vista ultimate upgrade and it says i can't use my old XP anymore under the liscense agreement so i trashed the cd's and the keys
because i used to be able to format and install with no problem
this time when i formatted it tells me this is an upgrade and not a clean install
I have formatted and installed this version of ultimate 3-4 times on the same machine
this makes 4-5th time
I had to format to get rid of some wierd system hanging issue that every 1-2 minuts it would hang for 2-3 seconds bizarre
anyways i had the most updated version of vista and last time i installed i had to call the number and get the automated help to give me some long code to type in
now it tells me
my key won't let me activate
but iv had it activated 3-4 other times with no troubleThursday, July 31, 2008 5:06 PM -

Carey,
Great write-up on how to Clean Install a Vista Upgrade! It even touches on the legal issues involved.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Darin -
I sometimes hesitate to recommend this workaround because it does, if fact, violate the Vista licensing agreement. However, it is more important, in my mind, to have a satisfied Windows Vista user who has an upgrade edition of Vista. Here is another article you may find interesting:
