File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\gdi32.dll[6.0.6000.16643] RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer restarted overnight (updated?), and I got the "unauthorized change" error when I tried to login to Windows this morning.  I read a bit on this forum, and ran the diagnostic report (below).  Based on what I read in a previous thread, it would appear the problem lies with "File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\gdi32.dll[6.0.6000.16643]"?  I went in to System Restore, and the earliest one I had was around midnight last night.  The other option was one that was created prior to an update around 2 am this morning.  I tried the earlier one, and it was unsuccessful in fixing the problem.  I went into Control Panel try to uninstall recent updates, and here are the most recent ones, which were installed on 6/11 (where are the ones from last night?)...

    KB950762

    KB951376

    KB951698

    KB905866

    KB950760

Anyway, does anyone have an update that I can uninstall that might be the culprit?  Thanks in advance.

  • Hi jpipes3,

There are no updates that contain build number 6.0.6000.16643 of file gdi32.dll.  The only update that contains any build number of file gdi32.dll is KB930627 and that update was Only available for 64bit versions of Vista.

So, because of that, I do not believe your issue was caused by an Update.  Other possible causes for a file showing as Mismatch can be from a Virus, random file Corruption or Corruption caused by hardware malfunction (usually a Hard Drive).

Since System Restore didn't work for you and we have no update that contains gdi32.dll[6.0.6000.16643], for you to re-install (so to overwrite the bad file), my only other suggestions would be to either:

    a) Try installing Service Pack 1 for Vista. It's possible that SP1 may contain a copy of gdi32.dll (either build number 6.0.6000.16643 or newer)

    or

    b) Reinstall Vista.

I do not like suggestion this option, but this is the last option that I know of, that will fix the issue.  I do suggest that before you reinstall, contact Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com. They may have other options, that I'm not aware of.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,
