  • To reinstall the HP Mediasmart server, you will need the recovery disk belonging to that system (and delivered with that system).
If you don't have these, contact the seller of the system or eventually the HP Product Support.
You won't be able to reinstall a Mediasmart server with the OEM WHS installation DVD either, since the special hardware has also special requirements.

The Windows Home Server Computer Restore CD you downloaded only serves the purpose of recovering a client PC, which has been backed up on the home server before.

  • This means, you have purchased a used Mediasmart server (or any other HP Media Server?) and don't know the console password?
Or is it a new machine?
In the first case you will have to perform either a fresh server installation as described in the documentation or a server recovery (if data on the machine should be kept). In the second case and after completing the initial part of the server installation you will have to install the connector software from the delivered CD, before any upgrade has been performed, ot try to download the version offered from http://hpserver:55000.
This should bring up the OOBE for the initial configuration, so that you can set a console password.

  • The question remains: what device do you have? This is important information; we can't give you good advice if you don't answer basic questions like this. Do you have an HP MediaSmart Server, or another HP device plus Windows Home Server installed on a PC?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
